This small country is famed for its undulating hills, snowcapped peaks boasting perfect ski slopes, cleanliness, and orderly historic cities. The capital, Bern, is nestled at the end of Lake Zürich, which is lined with parks full of relaxing locals. The tangled alleyways of the old town encase the Limmat River, hiding ancient buildings and squares, many of which date from the 16th and 17th centuries. Bahnhofstrasse is one of the city’s most famous streets, lying on top of the nation’s famous bank vaults. Another famous attraction is the Museum of Fine Arts. With a distinctly diplomatic air, gained from being the host to over 200 international organizations, Geneva is a regal city worth visiting. Excellent museums in the city include: the Museum of Art and History, International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, Horology Museum and the Voltaire Museum. The centrepiece of the lofty old town is the Romanesque and Gothic styled Cathedral St Pierre, along with the place du Bourg-de-Four (square). The charming smaller city of Lucerne offers indomitable scenery. Nearby, the Middle Ages town of Reuss has been well preserved and contains many surviving 15th century buildings, towers and bridges. Alternatively, the historic city of Bern is a good jumping off point for excursions to the magnificent castles of Schloss Thun and nearby Schloss Oberhofen. Both date from the 12th century. Around Interlaken, the Jungfrau region is where you’ll find the most amazing Alpine scenery. The three distinct peaks of the Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger are magnificent, and there are plenty of cable cars and funiculars for those who don’t want to try the hiking trails. The famous Matterhorn is one of the highest peaks in the Alps, at 4,478m; underneath is the famous ski resort of Zermatt. Another resort offering opulent world-famous Swiss ski slopes is St Moritz.
