Travel to Sedrun Disentis

Located to the south of Zürich in the rugged canton of Graubunden and lying near the Lukmanier and Oberalp passes, Sedrun Disentis is an attractive ski resort particularly suited to families. Reasonable prices and a huge range of on- and off-piste runs add to Sedrun’s appeal.

The 7th century villages have a superb location amid striking mountain scenery and are steeped in Romansch influence and culture. There is a full range of facilities and shops, while the centuries-old monastery and the folk museum offer insight into the region’s past.

Sedrun Disentis is characterized by its beautiful tree-lined runs, amounting to 110kms of groomed pistes, the longest of which is 12kms. The emphasis here is on intermediates and there is also plenty of off-piste action and the addition of a half-pipe for snowboarders. One cable car, seven chairlifts and 14 surface drags, with an hourly uplift capacity of 26,600 people, provide access to all pistes over the 1,770-metre vertical.

Between Sedrun and Disentis, there are over 10,000 beds available, in accommodation ranging from luxurious hotels to more modest bed-and-breakfasts and chalets. A multitude of cafés and restaurants serve up traditional German and Swiss fare, while several bars and a disco help ensure a lively night scene.

For alternative skiing, Flims/Laax/Falera ski resort is nearby, while Chur offers interesting sightseeing away from the slopes. At Chur’s heart is the 12th century Kathedrale, boasting a superbly carved Gothic altar; while adjacent lies the Bishops Palace, a handsome group of fortified buildings.

The ski season at Sedrun Disentis ski resort runs from December to April, and there are low season rates around the beginning and end of the season. The most convenient way to get here is to fly to Zürich and take a train, or hire a car.


Skiing in Sedrun Disentis

Sedrun Disentis ski resort lies at the western edge of the beautiful canton of Graubunden and offers very good rates for lift passes and accommodation. There are 110kms of fine skiing, as well as excellent off-piste powder and cross-country trails.

Most of the pisted runs are given over to intermediate skiers and snowboarders, who have 50 per cent of the total. The longest run is a lengthy 12kms, and 22 lift systems can move 26,600 people per hour over all pistes. Snowboarders have a half-pipe as well as great off-piste, and there are 35kms of cross-country trails.

The December to April ski season at Sedrun Disentis resort has good snow cover throughout the season, especially so in February, while cheap deals are offered at the beginning and towards the end of the season. The most practical travel option to Sedrun is to fly to Zürich and take a train transfer to the resort

Other winter activities and facilities at Sedrun Disentis ski resort include: ice-skating; curling; horse-drawn sleigh riding; high altitude ski tours; and winter golf. Also on offer are indoor swimming and tennis, and a sauna; while the après-ski is supplemented by cosy restaurants serving traditional fare, and a handful of bars and a disco.

With stunning mountain scenery all around and a commendable history evident in the 8th century monastery and the superb folk museum, the ski resorts of Sedrun and Disentis are a couple of gems. Accommodation is available in a wide range of establishments, with over 10,000 beds catering to all budgets.

Transportation to Sedrun Disentis

Sedrun Disentis is located in the canton of Graubunden in central Switzerland, 140kms south of Zürich, and has good rail access, making international rail travel convenient. The resort’s proximity to the A-2 autobahn also makes self-drive straightforward, while the quickest way here is to fly to Zürich and hire a car, or transfer by train.

Sedrun Disentis is 340kms from Munich and 800kms from Paris, and is well connected with the European motorway network. From Calais, the quickest route goes via Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Basel and Lucerne. Drive south along the A-8 from Lucerne and then exit on to routes 6 and 19 for the resort (1,000kms; 10 hours). By hire car from Zürich International Airport, take the A-4 and A-2 south to Andermatt, and then route 19 to the resort.

By train, there is an overnight service from Paris to Chur. Like Andermatt, Sedrun Disentis is a stop on the famed Glacier Express line and is 1 hour, 30 minutes away from Chur. Alternatively, there is a regular Eurostar service from London (Waterloo station) to Paris (gare du Nord), taking just under four hours.

Zürich International Airport is the nearest international airport to Sedrun Disentis and is located 1 hour, 30 minutes to the north. There is a rail terminal at the airport that has departures for Sedrun and Disentis, via Andermatt; alternatively, buses are also available.
