The traditional and charming atmosphere of a Swiss mountain village has been well-preserved at Saas – Fee. The narrow streets are pedestrianised and lined with a range of shops and facilities.Skiing at Saas – Fee resort takes place on the 100kms of pistes that wind around the glacier. Intermediate skiers have the best choice of runs (50kms), while beginners and advanced split the remaining runs (25kms each). Great snow conditions are to be expected in February, as the main season runs from November to April. Summer skiing runs into June, and cheap deals can be found in mid-December, mid-January, and mid-March to April. Practical options of getting to the resort are to fly to Geneva or Zürich, then use the train/bus transfer. Hiring a car is also popular to save time on the transfer. Apres-ski in Saas FeeAfter a hard day on the slopes, Saas – Fee offers a number of apres-ski activities: 20kms of hiking trails, mountaineering, snowshoeing, a sled run (day or night), curling, ice-skating (natural), and an impressive snow park. Indoor activities can be found at the fitness centre and sports hall, with tennis, an indoor swimming pool, sauna, hot tub and acuzzi facility. Lively après ski can be found at the numerous discos, bars and pubs in the village. Surrounded by 13 peaks higher than 4,000m, Saas – Fee keeps its traditional atmosphere with a car-free policy on its narrow streets.The resort of Saas – Fee has 7,500 beds available in hotels, chalets and apartments. Good facilities, shops, a quality snow park and the extended ski season are all part of the resort’s charm. Alternatives to skiing at Saas – Fee include a visit to the world’s largest ice pavilion or the world’s highest revolving restaurant (3,500m). The spectacular Matterhorn makes for an imposing background to nearby Zermatt, which is linked to Saas – Fee. Transportation in Saas FeeSaas – Fee resort, in the Valais region, is surrounded by the highest mountains in the Swiss Alps. In a location south of Bern and beside the Italian border, the most convenient method to arrive is via Geneva or Zürich airports. Transfers from the airport are usually can be made by train or bus.By car from Calais, the best route takes you via Reims, Dijon, Lausanne and Sion is by using the major motorways. On the A-9 autobahn leading to Brig, head south and follow the signs to the resort (930kms; 10 hours). From Zürich International Airport, use the A-1 and A-6 heading for Thun, from here, you can pick up route 223 for Brig (234kms; 3 hours, 40 minutes). From Geneva-Cointrin Airport, use the A-1 and A-9 Lake Geneva autobahns towards Brig (227kms; three hours). Being of equal distance from Saas – Fee, both Zürich International and Geneva-Cointrin airports have their advantages. Zürich has better flight options, while Geneva has better transfers to the resort. There is also good train routes from the UK to Bern. The resort can be reached by train from Zürich goes via Bern and Spiez to Brig. The train connection from Geneva takes you directly to Brig, where a bus runs every hour to Saas – Fee. |
