The village of Murren, while small, offers picture-perfect beauty. Sitting cliff-side, with stunning hotels and chalets, Murren ski resort offers stunning views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. Fantastic facilities, including a variety of small shops and Alpine sports museums, combine with traffic-free streets to make Murren truly a joy to experience. Murren has 2,000 guest beds available in accommodation ranging from simple inns to luxury hotels. Evening entertainment is fairly sedate and generally limited to the hotels; typically it comprises romantic fondue evenings, glacier bars and dance clubs. Access to any of Murren’s 32 pistes is gained by the resort’s excellent lift facilities, which are capable of carrying up to 9,100 people per hour. Of the 53kms of pistes available, the majority are beginner and intermediate level. The Jungfrau region boasts an impressive 200kms of pistes in total, with the longest run clocking in at 16kms. Those of intermediate ability are welcome to try the Wengen and Grindelwald slopes, situated in the adjacent Lauterbrunnen Valley. An additional reason to make a trip to the valley is to visit the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant; sitting at 2970m, this location, which once featured in a Bond movie, offers stunning views of the 200 mountains and 40 glaciers that surround it. December marks the beginning of Murren’s ski season, with its conclusion in April. Cheap rates are typically available mid-December, mid-January and mid-March. Its picturesque hotels, chalets and apartments offer a combined 2,000 guest beds. Murren’s 53kms of pistes are split according to difficulty, with 50 per cent deemed intermediate-friendly. Of the remainder, 30 per cent are suited to beginners and 20 per cent to advanced skiers. All 32 slopes are accessible via the 15 ski lifts, which are capable of carrying 9,000 people per hour. The resort has a longest run of 16kms, and the region boasts a similar distance dedicated to cross-country trailing. The season, which runs December to April, boasts a reliable snowfall for February and offers cheap rates mid-December, mid-January and mid-March. Indoor pursuits are to be found at the swimming pool, fitness suite and multi-purpose sports hall; while bars, discos and the larger hotels provide the evening entertainment.Transportation to MurrenMurren, in the Bern region, is linked to Zürich by both rail and motorway. The preferred means of travel is to fly to Zürich and take a regular train, changing at Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen, for the 150-kilometre journey to the resort. From Calais by car, expect the 920-kilometre journey to take nine hours going via Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Basel, Bern and Interlaken. From Zürich International Airport, get on the A-4 autobahn heading for Lucerne, followed by the A-8 heading for Thun, before driving the final leg south from Interlaken to Murren (156kms). By rail from London, take the 08:12 from Waterloo station to Paris (Nord), switch to gare de Lyon and take a TGV to Lausanne, making subsequent changes at Bern, Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. Arrival time is 20:27, with a journey time of 11 hours, 15 minutes. While Bern-Belp is the nearest airport, Zurich International Airport offers superior flight options and train connections. Trains, with changes at Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen, run regularly to Murren, with a journey time of just under four hours. Basel-Mulhouse and Geneva-Cointrin airports offer transfers also, with the latter providing the better options.
