Travel to Klosters with travel insurance from Essential Travel

Nestled in a romantic landscape, the ski resort of Klosters shares an expansive snow covered arena, Parsenn, with nearby Davos. The resort is situated in the heart of the Graubünden region, southeast of Zürich. The rich and famous are regulars at Klosters, which, along with slopes for beginners as well as the most advanced skier, boasts some of the finest downhill skiing in the world.

Speciality stores permeate the resort of Klosters, a small traditional village. Kloster-Platz is the most populated area, while fewer visitors can be found at Klosters-Dorf, to the north of the resort, a smaller less populated neighbourhood. The town is pleasantly enhanced by a certain architectural harmony afforded by chalet-style buildings.

An equal number of different ability slopes total 170kms of groomed downhill runs at Klosters ski resort, with a longest run of 12kms. Around 55,000 skiers are transported around the vast area of Klosters and Davos-Parsenn by 50 interconnected lift facilities, including two trams, eight gondolas, five chairlifts and 16 T-bars.

Early December, the last three weeks of January, the first week of February and late March through to April, offer the resort’s special organised ski weeks and are the best times to ski. A flight to Zürich, with a train to Landquart and a road transfer to the resort, is the best way to arrive.


Skiing in Klosters

Not far from the Austrian border and southeast of Zürich lies the elegant ski resort of Klosters. The brilliant snowfield of Parsenn features at nearby Davos and is connected with Klosters, offering 170kms of great beginner to advanced skiing on both sides of the valley.

There are 170kms of excellent ski terrain at Klosters ski resort, with slopes divided into 40 per cent for beginners, 30 per cent for intermediate skiers and 30 per cent for advanced skiers. Around 55,000 skiers per hour are moved around the interconnected area of Klosters and Davos by 50 lifts. A further 35kms of cross-country trails supplement the pisted slopes at the resort.

Snowboarding is also catered for here with two terrain parks and a half-pipe, while a range of activities and facilities off the slopes are on offer for winter sports addicts, including: 30kms of winter walking trails; ice-skating (natural); curling; horse-drawn sleigh rides; and snowshoeing. A fitness centre, sauna, squash and tennis courts are among indoor facilities at Klosters; Platz and the larger hotels offer the bulk of the nightlife.

Dorf and Platz merge to form the attractive, traditional resort of Klosters. The nightlife and sports shopping is located at the business end of the resort at Platz, while an old world charm abounds at the sleepy little village of Dorf, closer to the gentle beginner slopes. Luxury five-star hotel/resorts as well as modest chalets and apartments provide 8,500 visitor beds.

February offers the best snow conditions while December, January to early February, and late March to early April provide special rate ski weeks at Klosters.

A flight to Zürich International Airport and a rail transfer is the best way to get to Klosters. A Klosters-bound train leaves after a change at nearby Landquart. The airport provides hire car services, making travel to the resort faster and more convenient.

Apres-ski in Klosters

Lodgings at the resort include 6,500 beds in chalets, apartments and other accommodation, while 2,000 beds are available in over 30 hotels, with the cheapest situated at Klosters-Dorf. Fantastic restaurants, colourful bars and tea rooms play host to the numerous relaxing après-ski opportunities, while classical concerts also provide enjoyable off-slope entertainment. The young are well looked after here at the resort, which boasts an excellent ski kindergarten.

A plethora of bars and nightclubs offering livelier nightlife can be found at the bustling town of Davos, which shares its slopes with Klosters. There are interesting sightseeing opportunities at charming hamlets surrounding both the resorts of Klosters and Davos.

Transportation to Klosters

In the Graubünden region, 140kms southeast of Zürich, lies the ski resort of Klosters, which can be reached by rail and road. Zürich receives frequent flights from many international and European cities, while a train to Klosters is available from the airport via Landquart. It is also possible to travel to the resort by train from London, or along modern autoroutes and autobahns by car.

By car, travel via Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Basel, Zürich and Landquart from Calais. (970kms; 9 to 10 hours). From Zürich International Airport, hire a vehicle and travel on the Zürich-Chur (A-3) road to the Landquart/Davos exit. The journey from there takes you through Kublis and on to Klosters-Dorf and finally to Klosters-Platz.

Regular Eurostar trains, taking between 13 and 14 hours, and involving two to four changes, leave from London. The most convenient connection is the Waterloo to Brussels (Midi), leaving at 07:43. From Brussels, catch the Landquart-bound Eurocity at 12:15, arriving at 21:33. A regional train, leaving at 21:45 and arriving at 22:31, will then take you to Klosters.

Zürich International Airport is the nearest to the resort (150kms) and is serviced by scheduled and charter services worldwide. Two trains per hour travel from Zürich to Klosters via Landquart, where you board a second train (2 hours, 30 minutes); hourly trains leave Landquart for Klosters. Transfer time can be reduced by an hour when hiring a vehicle from the airport.
