Minibuses are also a popular form of transport for the more budget conscious, while hiring a car is the best option if you want to explore the country. Car hire rates are reasonable and the road network is extensive, with roads being of a good quality.

Incidents of crime are fairly high in South African cities and car-jackings and muggings are not uncommon occurrences. While South Africa has good quality roads, care must be taken while negotiating mountain passes.
