The country boasts excellent ski resorts, lovely summer resort lakes, and historic settlements. Additionally, Slovenia has a relaxed atmosphere and enjoyable but modest entertainment options.Slovenias largest ski area, the Pohorje mountain range in the northeast, is home to Mariborsko Pohorje ski resort. This resort is best known for its dazzling white ski slopes and numerous cross-country trails. Additionally, there are plenty of scenic trekking routes passing through endless forests and by pristine streams. Nearby, the city of Maribor is Slovenias second-largest, and has all the amenities a visitor could possibly need. Kranjska Gora ski resort is situated in the Zgornjesavska Valley, one of the most breathtaking Alpine valleys. The valley is best known for its World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing and ski flights on the giant ski-jump in Planica. Kranjska Gora offers 30kms of mainly intermediate slopes, with some gentle and more open lower slopes for less experienced skiers. There are also a number of more challenging runs for advanced skiers. At the centre of Triglav National Park, in northwestern Slovenia, you’ll find the Bohinj glacial basin high in the Julian Alps. This region offers two major ski areas: Kobla, above the town of Bistrica, and Vogel, farther up and accessible by cable car. Bohinj offers picturesque landscapes, green forests and a traditional atmosphere. There is a total of 58kms of pistes, with 23kms at Kobla and 35kms at Vogel. Additional ski resorts in Slovenia include: Kanin (Julian Alps), Rogla (Pohorje), and Krvavec (Kamnisko-Savinjske Alps). Ljubljanas international airport receives frequent flights from destinations throughout Europe. You can also arrive here by train or road through the Alps from Austria or Italy. The most important tourist destinations in Slovenia are served by modern and comfortable trains, with direct lines from Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Yugoslavia and Macedonia. Alternatively, international bus transport is well organized and relatively inexpensive. By car, you can enter Slovenia via one of the border crossings with Italy, Austria, Hungary or Croatia. Slovenia’s highways are good and clearly signposted; beside the roads are rest stops, inns and motels. Travellers may be at risk of accidents when travelling in unfamiliar countries or driving along winding mountain roads. Additionally, winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding, can result in serious injuries. Language barriers may also put you at risk of missing travel arrangements. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you or your family when going to a ski resort in Slovenia.
