Ski resorts in Rogla

Rogla ski resort is situated in the western reaches of the Pohorje mountain range, in the northeastern region of Slovenia, 40kms from Maribor and 95kms from Llubljana. The surrounding Pohorje countryside is renowned for its natural beauty, with many scattered plateaus, waterfalls, forests and lakes.

The spa town of Zrece is only 16kms away, offering thermal pool facilities and a new football and athletic stadium. The town is steeped in culture and history, and flanked by beautiful green forests that are a trademark of the Pohorje area.

Rogla is a fairly flat ski resort, perfect for beginners and lower intermediates, making it a popular family getaway. It offers 10kms of downhill runs, 15 per cent of which are allocated to beginners, 75 per cent to intermediates, and 10 per cent to advanced/expert skiers. Extremely experienced skiers may find Rogla a little unchallenging, but there are a number of other ski resorts in the vicinity to provide alternative skiing opportunities.

There are many possibilities to be active in Rogla. The ski resort offers hiking, tobogganing, horseback riding and indoor swimming, and there are two sports halls and a modern fitness centre providing opportunities for basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis, squash, badminton, martial arts and table tennis. Additionally, the nearby town of Zrece offers thermal spa amenities.

The ski season at Rogla runs from November to April. The resort is most easily accessed by a plane flight to Graz, just over the Austrian border, or to Llubljana, 95kms away, and road transportation the rest of the way.

Skiing in Rogla

Rogla is a well-known Slovenian ski resort, situated at one of the highest points of the Pohorje range (1,517m). The resort is ‘upside-down’, with facilities and accommodation on top of the mountain, above the ski slopes, and is in close proximity to Slovenia’s second-largest city, Maribor, and the spa town of Zrece. Rogla is a relaxed, family orientated destination that hosts many ski competitions, and offers a wide range of alternative winter activities.

Rogla’s skiing is best suited to beginners and lower intermediates, with 15 per cent and 75 per cent (respectively) of the 10kms of piste length catering to these levels. The slopes are serviced by one quad chair, one double chair and nine surface lifts, and artificial snow machines ensure that the pistes are well powdered in winter. In addition to the downhill runs, Rogla also offers 30kms of cross-country skiing on a high plateau.

Skiing is offered in Rogla from November to April. The resort can be accessed by road, or air/rail transportation combined with a transfer by road.

Rogla’s skiing is pleasant, but limited, and the resort might not be so popular, but for the vast amount of other activities it has on offer. These include hiking, tobogganing, horseback riding, indoor swimming, basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis, squash, badminton, martial arts and table tennis.

Rogla is known for its impressive culinary offerings, and there are a number of good restaurants to provide sustenance after a long day on the slopes. There is a leisure centre with a cinema, a massage parlour, a beauty salon and a sauna, and there are two nightclubs for those after a bit of nightlife. Accommodation is provided by hotels and chalets on top of the mountain, and additional lodging in nearby Zrece. Childcare facilities are available at Rogla, while Zrece (16kms from the ski resort) has an array of visitor services.

Sightseeing opportunities abound in the Pohorje area. Not only is there a plethora of breathtaking natural attractions, such as the Sumik waterfall and a cluster of tiny lakes known as the Lovrenska Jezera, but there are also many cultural and historical features, including old castles at Celje and Ptuj.

Rogla has a variety of restaurants serving excellent cuisine, two nightclubs, a cinema, beauty salon, massage parlour, sauna, and childcare facilities. Nearby Zrece is popular with visitors for its spa amenities, and offers a range of shops and other services. Accommodation is provided by hotels and chalets in both Rogla and Zrece.

Transportation to Rogla

Rogla is located in the northeastern part of Slovenia, close to the country’s second-largest city, Maribor, and can be reached by road, rail or air. The most convenient means of transportation from the UK is a plane flight to Graz, located just across the border in Austria, followed by a car or bus journey to the resort.

If you decide to drive to Slovenia from the UK, be prepared for a lengthy journey. Firstly, you will need to transport your vehicle across the English Channel by car ferry or the Chunnel train service to France. You can reach Slovenia via one of the border crossings with Italy, Austria, Hungary or Croatia. From the capital Llubljana, or the city of Maribor, Rogla can be reached by the E59 highway, and the Slov Konjice exit. From the exit, follow the signs to the resort.

The European rail network is well-connected, reasonably priced and efficient. From the UK, the Eurostar leaves daily from Waterloo station, reaching Paris in just a few hours. From France you have the option of various routes into Slovenia - you can enter the country on direct lines from Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Yugoslavia and Macedonia. There is an express train between Llubljana and Maribor (40kms away from Rogla) from where you will need to take a bus, or hire a car, to access the resort.

Flying to Slovenia is by far the most convenient means of reaching the country. To reach Rogla, you can either fly into Graz, just over the Austrian border, or Llubljana, 95kms away, and then proceed by road to the resort.

Slovenia can be also be accessed from the UK by a series of European buses, but across such long distances bus transportation is extremely uncomfortable. However, this is the most affordable transportation option available, and worth considering if you are on a tight budget.
