It is the only ski resort in Slovenia that boast slopes higher than 2,000m and, due to its altitude, the snowfall in winter is abundant.The town of Bovec has a rich historical heritage which is kept alive by the numerous old buildings, houses, farms and monuments, and the importance placed on tradition by the local people. Although small, Kanin resort has the advantage of reliable snowfall and a variety of pistes suitable for all levels of expertise, from beginners to experts. It has 14kms of ski terrain, half of which is groomed slopes and the other half, off-piste trails in open acreage. Because of its high altitude, this ski area is never crowded and is defined by its sunny location and a breathtaking view that stretches from the heart of the Alps to the Adriatic Sea. There are 16kms of cross-country skiing trails at Kanin, and it is possible to take ski tours with experienced guides to the neighbouring high Krnica Valley. The pistes at Kanin can be accessed by means of one cable car, three chairlifts and two surface lifts. The ski resort holds regular off-piste competitions. The winter season at Kanin runs from December to the start of May. The ski resort is most easily accessible by flying to the gateway airport at Llubljana and then taking a bus transfer or hiring a car to reach Kanin. Skiing in KaninKanin is situated in the far northwestern corner of Slovenia, just above the small town of Bovec. It is known for its snow-sure slopes, affording superb skiing in winter, and its stupendous panoramas of the Soča River Valley, the Slovene Adriatic, and the Italian and Julian Alps.Blessed with an abundance of snow in winter, Kanin offers limited but impressive skiing, with runs suited to all levels of ability. Guests who buy a six- or seven-day Kanin ski pass can ski for two days free at these neighbouring resorts. Beyond skiing, Kanin offers a comprehensive selection of alternative activities and facilities. These include ice-skating, parasailing, hang-gliding, tobogganing, a gym, a fitness centre, a sauna and an indoor swimming pool. The surrounding region is packed with gorgeous hiking routes, offering exquisite scenery and fabulous views. The skiing season at Kanin runs from December to the start of May. The activities offered at Kanin extend beyond the ski slopes, with ice-skating, parasailing, hang-gliding, tobogganing, and indoor swimming offered by the resort. A gym, sauna and fitness centre are available at Kanin, and there are a multitude of fabulous walking trails in the surrounding area. A large part of the Bovec region lies inside Triglav National Park, and there are wonderful sightseeing opportunities to be had nearby, including many beautiful lakes, Kaninski Podi, where you can find potholes up to 1,000m deep, and the 106 metre-high Boka waterfall. Transportation to KaninAir transportation is the quickest and most convenient way of reaching Slovenia from the UK, but it is also an extremely pricey option. A cheaper means of getting to Kanin is by road.Driving to Kanin is a long and tedious journey, but it does have its advantages. Many of Slovenia’s more isolated towns and villages are difficult to reach if you don’t have your own vehicle, and driving allows you to see more of the country at your own pace. Additionally, you can take advantage of the numerous sightseeing attractions surrounding Kanin. To reach the Europe with your vehicle, you will need to take a car ferry across the English Channel to France. From here, you can continue driving to Slovenia, with the choice of numerous international border crossings into the country. Kanin is located approximately two hours’ drive from the capital city of Llubljana, 30 minutes from Tarvisio (on the Venice-Salzburg motorway), and an hour from the Italian city of Udine. To reach Slovenia by train, you take the Eurostar rail service from Waterloo station to Paris. From Paris you can plan a rail route that is most convenient for you. The main train routes into Slovenia run from Salzburg, Trieste, Vienna and Zagreb, to Llubljana. Bovec does not have its own train station, so you will need to take alternative transportation from Llubljana to the resort, or take a train from Llubljana to Bled, and then a bus to Bovec/Kanin. The quickest and easiest way of reaching Slovenia from the UK is by air. Llubljana’s international airport is situated two hours from Kanin, and bus transportation is available from the airport to the resort. It is also possible to reach Slovenia from the UK via a series of European buses, but this is a long, uncomfortable journey, and is not recommend |
