Travel to Voss with travel insurance from Essential Travel

Voss is blessed with a scenic location on the edge of a lake, with a magnificent backdrop of snowy mountains. The village has retained a typically Norwegian feel, and still features old smoking houses and culinary traditions, including the ancient dish of ‘smalahove’ - grilled heads of sheep. Despite these age-old characteristics, the ski resort is filled with modern amenities and offers much for the visitor to see and do.

Voss has approximately 40kms of runs, divided between 11 pistes and served by a system of 10 lifts. One run is allocated to beginners, five to intermediates, two to advanced skiers and three to experts. The longest of the downhill slopes is six kilometres, and there are 63kms of scenic cross-country trails on Mount Hangur.

Voss is an excellent destination for non-skiers, or those wanting a bit of variety. Apart from the ski slopes, Voss offers a huge variety of other activities, including bowling, a fitness centre, a cinema, a folk museum, hiking trails, squash, tandem paragliding, sleigh rides, ice-fishing, ice-skating, heated pools, a sauna and snowboarding.

The town features numerous restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars to provide après-ski amusement. Lodging is diverse, ranging from top-class hotels to camping cabins, pensions, mountain lodges and apartments.

Located between two of Norway’s most renowned fjords, the Sogne and Hardanger, Voss is the perfect ski resort from which to take sightseeing excursions.

The winter season at Voss extends from the end of November to the beginning of May. The ski resort is conveniently located close to the city of Bergen, making it easily accessible by plane, train or car.

Skiing in Voss

Voss’s captivating lakeside location in the heart of Norway’s fjord country - halfway between the majestic Sogne and Hardanger fjords - combined with varied skiing, uncrowded slopes, hospitality and accessibility, have made it one of Norway’s most popular ski destinations.

The skiing, 11 pistes spread out over 40kms, caters for all levels of ability from beginners to experts. However, extremely experienced skiers have limited choices, apart from three black runs some off-piste trails. Apart from these three blacks, Voss features one green run, five blue runs and two red runs. The longest run is approximately six kilometres. Additionally, there are 60kms of cross-country tracks in some lovely terrain. The downhill slopes are connected by a system of 10 lifts.

Voss offers skiing from the end of November until the beginning of May. It is located approximately 100kms from the city of Bergen, and is easily accessible by means of car, plane or train.

Apres-ski in Voss

Besides skiing, a whole host of fun and exciting alternative activities are offered at Voss. The resort caters for skiers and non-skiers alike, with snowboarding, telemarking, bowling, squash, tandem paragliding, snowshoe hiking, ice-fishing and ice-skating on offer. Additionally, the resort features a cinema, a sauna, a folklore museum, heated pools and a fitness centre.

Nightlife at Voss is less than wild, but there is a selection of eateries, bars and pubs to satisfy those wanting some after-action entertainment. Lodging comes in all forms, shapes and sizes, with hotels, mountain lodges, pensions, apartments and camping cabins suited to all preferences and budgets.

Transportation to Voss

Voss is conveniently located only 100kms from the gateway city of Bergen, and is easily accessible by road, rail or plane transportation to Bergen, followed by a bus transfer to the resort. The quickest and easiest way of reaching Voss is by via air travel, but is also the costliest. Train travel takes a close second place, being affordable, comfortable and efficient.

Driving to Voss from the UK is fairly easy, though time-consuming. It involves travelling with your car to the port of Newcastle, taking a car ferry from Newcastle to Bergen, and then driving the last 100kms from Bergen to Voss, east along highway E16.

Rail travel is an excellent means of travelling to Norway from the UK, as both the Eurostar and the Norwegian rail network provide excellent services, and trains are less costly than air travel. The Eurostar runs daily from Waterloo station to Brussels, from where you can take a sleeper train to Copenhagen. From Copenhagen, you can take a connecting train to Oslo. Voss is located on the Bergen Railway line – arguably the most beautiful rail route in the world - between Oslo and Bergen.

Bergen has its own international airport, to which it is possible to fly directly from the UK. Six daily buses run from Bergen to Voss, taking approximately 1 hour, 45 minutes to reach the resort. This is the quickest and most convenient way to reach Voss, but if you’re on a tight budget it is somewhat impractical.
