Ski routes are split among beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers at a ratio of 25 per cent, 50 per cent and 25 per cent respectively. Four surface ski lifts service the slopes, consisting of a triple chair, T-bar, learner platter lift and a rope tow. There are no on-site lodgings at Mount Dobson, but nearby Fairlie presents a good selection of accommodation options including hotels, motels, rental cottages, lodges and bed and breakfasts. Facilities at the ski resort include: a cafeteria serving hot drinks, meals and snacks; an excellent ski school; a ski and board rental shop and a ski patrol to ensure visitor safety. The small town of Fairlie has several good dining options as well as a number of small bars and pubs providing après-ski entertainment. For a break from the slopes and a superb leisure experience, try an air safari to the glaciers of Mount Cook, an unforgettable flight that is not to be missed! The ski season at Mount Dobson runs from June to October, with good slope conditions prevailing throughout the season due to the resort’s high altitude. Skiing in Mount DobsonFor a superb skiing experience for both learners and advanced riders, visit the scenic winter resort of Mount Dobson, located roughly 16 miles from the town of Fairlie in the rural region of South Canterbury. Mount Dobson is home to New Zealand’s largest beginners’ ski area, providing wide, empty slopes on which inexperienced riders can hone their skills, while the exciting, off-piste rides located high up on the mountain offer stunning views of Tekapo and Pukaki lakes, and Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.Mount Dobson is an ideal resort for family or mixed-ability groups due to its wide range of skiing options, with routes suitable for beginners (25 per cent), intermediates (50 per cent) and advanced skiers (25 per cent). Gentle, spacious beginner slopes are located on a wide-open, tree-free basin, while powdery, off-piste routes can be found at a higher altitude, providing a thrilling ride down to the groomed trails. The ski resort also features a natural half-pipe and snow-boarders are welcome at Mount Dobson. The resort’s cafeteria offers snacks, drinks and hot meals to those in need of sustenance during or after a day on the slopes, while the town of Fairlie features an ample selection of good dining and drinks venues. There is no slope-side lodging at Mount Dobson, but various lodging options including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, lodges and cottages are available at Fairlie. Mount Dobson’s rental shop offers a limited range of skiing and boarding gear and the resort encompasses a commendable ski school, with eight instructors providing tuition for all ages and levels of skiing and boarding ability. Skiing is offered between June and October at Mount Dobson and the ski resort is easily accessible from Fairlie via hire car or shuttle bus. Transportation to Mount DobsonMount Dobson is located 16 miles from the town of Fairlie in South Canterbury and is most easily reached by means of hire car, though ski shuttle transportation is also available during certain periods. The nine-mile access road to the resort is well-maintained and easily traversed by both camper vans and buses.The drive from Christchurch to Fairlie is roughly 115 miles and it takes just over 2 hours to complete. From Fairlie, Mount Dobson is a further 16 miles, with the turn-off to the resort lying just off the Christchurch/Queenstown highway. Road transportation from Fairlie to Mount Dobson takes approximately 40 minutes. The ski resort has one of the best access roads in the country and plenty of parking is available at the base camp. Chains may be required at times and they are available from the Ski Shack at Fairlie. Christchurch International Airport receives air traffic from Australia, Singapore, Japan, Korea, USA, Fiji and Rarotonga, including connecting flights from other destinations. Should you wish to stay overnight in Christchurch before travelling to Fairlie via bus or hire car, taxis and buses provide transportation from the airport into town, with a journey time of about 30 minutes to reach Christchurch. Shuttle bus transportation from Fairlie to Mount Dobson is available on weekends and during holidays. |
