Moroccos exotic appeal is rooted in its curious blend of past and present, its architectural treasures and exquisite scenery. The country is predominantly characterised by its Muslim culture, but its geographical position in Africa and its proximity to the European continent have resulted in a host of cultural influences that have imbued Morocco with a unique and fascinating allure.

Morocco is permeated by historical sites and buildings, and boasts a magnificent coastline, exquisite mountains and striking desert expanses. Most travellers are drawn to the colourful markets of Marrakesh and the legendary city of Casablanca, which was shot to fame with the release of the Humphrey Bogart film of the same name.

Marrakesh, the countrys former capital, is a vibrant, bustling city where lively markets and festivals are juxtaposed with superb architectural achievements and wide boulevards. The citys central square is known as Jemäa El Fna, and it is here that visitors can experience the citys most prolific collection of street performers, from jugglers to snake charmers. Other highlights of the city are the atmospheric souks (markets) and the spectacular Koutobia Mosque.

Casablanca is Moroccos most prominent city, both in size and population. Despite its romantic reputation, Casablanca is primarily a large industrial and commercial city, and not one of the countrys most attractive destinations. Recommended sights are the Royal Palace, the old medina and the Great Mosque.

Tangier is set against a backdrop of hills and is a popular tourist destination due to its gorgeous ocean views and beautiful beaches. Its beguiling markets, where peasants come to sell their wares, are a riot of bright colours, motion and sound. Fès is a UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses one of the oldest existing medieval cities on the globe, Fès el-Bali. Visiting this ancient medina will immediately transport you back in time, and is an unforgettable experience.

The Moorish coastal town of Essaouira is graced with a stunningly beautiful beach that stretches far along the coast, and is peppered with old forts that show the cumulative influences of French, Portuguese and Berber military architecture. The mountain village of Tafraoute has a red granite Casbah and offers access to the nearby Painted Rocks, while the desert settlement of Erfoud is an excellent starting point for excursions to the dunes of the Sahara.

Moroccos lovely coast presents a multitude of leisure opportunities, including swimming, sunbathing and windsurfing. Camel riding through the Sahara is also a popular pastime, as is shopping in the countrys many markets.
