Travel to Phoenix Park with ski insurance from Essential Travel

Established in 1995 as Asia’s largest ski resort, Phoenix Park is located in scenic Kangwon province, approximately 87 miles from the city of Seoul. It is known for its fantastic variety of slopes, spectacular views and great selection of lodgings and facilities.

Phoenix Park is one of Korea’s most outstanding ski resorts, with 13 slopes recognised by the International Ski Federation and a diverse selection of accommodation that has been carefully designed and constructed to blend in as harmoniously as possible with the exquisite natural surroundings. The accommodation options and facilities are world class and the region encompasses a number of significant tourist attractions for visitors to explore in off-slope hours.

There are 13 ski slopes at Phoenix Park including trails connected by a system of eight chairlifts and suitable for all ages and levels of experience ranging from beginner to advanced. The variety of ski pistes at the resort is excellent, with novice trails such as the spacious Penguin Run and challenging advanced routes such as the Champion Course and Dizzy Course available. Phoenix Park also offers a mediocre snowboard park equipped with a half pipe, tabletop, round quarter and rails.

There is plenty of accommodation at Phoenix Park, with hundreds of rooms available at condominiums, hotels and youth hostels. The ski resort is positioned so as to provide fabulous views over the stunning surrounding countryside and facilities here are top-notch including a swimming pool, massage centre, karaoke, billiards, bowling alleys, convenience store, photo lab, sports shop, pharmacy, bank and a variety of dining establishments, coffee shops, bars and dance clubs.

Kangwon province is home to many tourist attractions including the Sangwonsa Temple, Herbnara Farm and Odaesan National Park. Yongpyong resort is also located nearby, offering alternative ski trails and accommodation options.

The ski season at Phoenix Park runs from December to March and the resort is accessible by bus or shuttle bus from Seoul. An alternative and more convenient way of reaching the resort is by hiring a car and driving from Seoul.

Skiing in Phoenix Park

The Phoenix Park complex was opened in 1995 with the aim of providing international standard skiing for locals and foreigners alike. The resort is known for the diversity of its runs and the beauty of its scenery, with snow-blanketed mountain peaks surrounding the resort.

Phoenix Park boasts a fantastic array of skiing options, with the resort offering 13 runs ranging in difficulty from novice to advanced level. The resort’s valley pistes on Mount Taegisan are internationally recognised and experienced skiers will enjoy the demanding runs such as the Champion Course, while beginners can breathe easily on gentle slopes such as the Penguin Run. The slopes are served by Phoenix Park’s gondola and key ski lift system, with the latter offering transportation right to the top of the mountain, from where riders can select their skiing route. Phoenix Park is also home to a snowboard park which, although not quite up to European standards, offers a table top, half pipe, rails and a round quarter.

Phoenix Park also offers a wide range of non-skiing activities and entertainment including bowls, billiards, massage, sauna and a range of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Accommodation is plentiful and varied, with hotels, condos and youth hostels available.

Skiing is offered at Phoenix Park between December and March, although the length of the season varies from year to year depending on weather conditions. The resort can be reached by means of bus or shuttle bus from Seoul, with the journey by road taking about 2 hours in good conditions and up to 4 hours when traffic or bad weather cause delays.

Transportation to Phoenix Park

Phoenix Park is located in the mid-eastern section of the Korean peninsula in the province of Kangwon, approximately 87 miles from the major city of Seoul. Transportation options to the resort include buses or shuttle buses that leave regularly from various departure points in Seoul, or alternatively you can hire a car and drive to the resort.

The journey from Seoul to Phoenix Park is only 87 miles by road and should take about 2 hours, but congestion and bad weather conditions can increase the journey time significantly, particularly in the winter.

If you intend on flying to Korea from an overseas destination, you will probably arrive at Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, which is the city’s main international air transportation hub, situated roughly 30 miles southwest of the city centre. Domestic flights are more likely to touch down at Gimpo Airport, Seoul’s primary domestic air terminal. Taxis, buses and shuttle buses are available at both airports, providing transportation to the city centre and to bus and train stations in the region.

Buses for Jangpyeong can be boarded at Dong-Seoul Express Bus Terminal. From the Jangpyeong Express Bus Terminal a free shuttle bus runs to Phoenix Park, leaving every two hours from 09:00 until after dark, with a journey time of about 15 minutes.
