The picturesque setting and lack of crowds make this a perfect choice for families. There are an appealing number of restaurants and a pleasant, friendly atmosphere. The resort’s close proximity to Switzerland gives it an interesting blend of characteristics as well. The resort offers a range of accommodation from chalets through to hotels, with around 3,000 beds in total. There are around 30 bars and restaurants altogether, plus one nightclub. A museum traces the resort’s history, while two excellent ski schools are on hand, providing up to 80 instructors. Natural ice-skating; ice hockey; paragliding; mountaineering; hiking and heli-skiing are some of the activities on offer at the resort. Macugnaga Monte Rosa has 15 slopes, with the bulk of the runs dedicated to beginner and intermediate level skiers. There are some attractive off-piste options for advanced skiers who get just under 20 per cent of slopes at this resort. The slopes total 38kms, with the longest run measuring seven kilometres. Twelve lifts service the area, with a capacity for 7,800 skiers per hour. The highest lift reaches 2,970m and the lowest 1,330m. Freestyle skiers and snowboarders get some great off-piste areas, while the resort also provides 80 instructors, divided between two ski schools. Alternatively, catch the Eurostar from London to Paris and connect with the train travelling to Domodossola via Lausanne. The train station is a one-hour bus or taxi journey from the resort. Apres-ski in Macugnaga Monte RosaMacugnaga-Monte Rosa offers a range of activities and facilities for après-ski. Some of the leisure activities on offer at the resort include: visits to the delightful museum in the village; natural ice-skating; ice hockey; paragliding; mountaineering; hiking and heli-skiing. There are some pleasant restaurants and bars, as well as a nightclub for after hours entertainment.Transportation to Macugnaga Monte RosaMacugnaga Monte Rosa is close to the Swiss border and a fair distance from the nearest airports. The journey to the resort involves a combination of air, road or rail. The most convenient way is to fly to Milan International Airport and take a direct Skibus or drive to the resort. Alternatively, you can catch the Eurostar to Paris, and connect with a train heading to the local train station just one hour from the resort.By car, Macugnaga Monte Rosa is 1,007kms (11 hours) from Calais, with a journey through France and Switzerland before reaching Italy and the resort. The total toll road costs are €40. If flying to Milan, the journey by car is two hours over a distance of 144kms. Take the SS549 out of Milan and head down the SS33 as far as the A26 turn-off. Then follow the signs on the A26 towards the A8 and the resort. By train, you can catch the Eurostar from London Waterloo or Ashford in Kent to Paris. Then connect with the train travelling on the Paris-Lausanne-Domodossola line and transfer from Domodossola to the resort via a one-hour bus or taxi service. The journey will take around 15 hours in total from London to the resort. Trains are also available from Milan, taking 1 hour, 20 minutes. The nearest international airport to Macugnaga Monte Rosa is Milan, at 140kms; the journey by road from here takes about 2 hours, 30 minutes. Alternatively, catch a train from Milan to Domodossola, just one hour from the resort, and transfer by road from there. |
