Ski resorts in Gressoney

Set in the heart of the Monte Rosa ski area is Gressoney, a traditional mountain village with a long heritage. The area covers 150kms of pistes over three valleys. With views of Mont Blanc, the Monte Rosa Glacier and the Matterhorn, Gressoney really is a spectacular location from which to experience some great skiing.

Gressoney is an authentic village unspoilt by tourism and proud of its relaxed nature. Families and serious skiers are usually found at the resort, which offers traditional wooden and stone buildings as accommodation. The distinctive local culture is reflected throughout the village, which offers an informal and subdued nightlife in contrast with larger, busier resorts. Stunning views encapsulate this charming village.

Gressoney has 74kms of downhill slopes, with the longest being nine kilometres in length. The village has a top elevation of 2,967m and a vertical descent of 1,607m. Fourteen kilometres of runs are suitable for the beginner, with 48kms for intermediate skiers and 12kms for advanced skiers. There are 13 lifts servicing the area, with a total lift capacity of 17,000 skiers per hour. Cross-country skiers and snowboarders can enjoy 30kms of trails in various areas around the resort.

As part of the Monte Rosa ski area, Gressoney has access to 150kms of ski runs and is completely interlinked with the resort of Champoluc, offering a total of 24 lifts in the area. Alagna is the third resort which is not linked but can be reached off-piste with a guide. Both places have excellent skiing and a distinctive character.

The ski season runs from December to late April, with some areas accessible till early May. Gressoney is located 80kms and one hour away from Turin, the location of the nearest international airport.

Skiing in Gressoney

Featuring views of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and the Monte Rosa Glacier, Gressoney is a charming authentic mountain village, with a relaxed atmosphere and access to 150kms of great ski slopes.

Gressoney provides visitors with a relaxed experience in atmospheric surroundings, generated from the traditional wooden chalets and its no-nonsense approach to skiing. The village sits at an elevation of 1,360m and has a small number of après-ski facilities, including mountain restaurants, plus leisure activities such as outdoor swimming and ice-skating.

At Gressoney there are 74kms of downhill slopes providing a good variety of runs, with 14kms for the beginner, 48kms for the intermediate and 12kms for the advanced skier. The top elevation at the resort is 2,967m, with a total vertical descent of 1,607m.

Thirteen lifts service the area, with a capacity for 17,000 skiers per hour. These include two cable cars, one cableway, five chairlifts and three ski lifts. There are a further 30kms of trails around the resort suitable for cross-country skiers and snowboarders, with an access to a total of 150kms of runs in the area.

The season runs from December to late April, with some areas accessible until early May. Pass rates offer good value for money and compare favourably with other resorts in the area.

Turin, the nearest international airport, is located 80kms from Gressoney and a one-hour drive by road. You can complete your journey to the resort from here by hire car. Alternatively you can catch the overnight train to Turin from Paris and transfer from there by rail and bus service.

Apres-ski in Gressoney

The village of Gressoney offers a handful of après-ski and non-ski alternatives. Activities and leisure facilities available at the resort include: indoor and outdoor swimming, saunas, cinema, ice-skating and snowshoeing, plus heli-skiing. There are a few bars and clubs offering evening entertainment, plus some well positioned mountain restaurants offering fine cuisine in a majestic setting.

There are a number of on and off the mountain restaurants, such as Bedemie and Del Ponte above Gabiet, offering great food at affordable prices. The nightlife is centred round the bars in the village, which include the Petit Bar and the Hirsch Stube, serving excellent original draft beer.

There are many hotels, as well as traditional wooden and stone chalets, offering accommodation. A range of après-ski activities and facilities includes: indoor and outdoor swimming; saunas; cinema; ice-skating; and snowshoeing. Children are more than welcome at this resort, which has two ski schools offering tuition (tel: +39 0125355291 or +39 0125366 015).

Transportation to Gressoney

Gressoney is located in Monte Rosa Valley and getting here invariably involves travelling by air and connecting by road or alternatively travelling via rail. The most convenient way to arrive at the resort is by catching a flight from London to Turin and transferring by car to the resort. Another option is to travel by overnight train from Paris to Turin after a connecting service from London to Paris with Eurostar. From Turin rail station, a train and bus connection will leave you at the resort.

By car, Gressoney is about 956kms from Calais, with a driving time of just under 10 hours and toll costs of around €80. The route will take you through France and Switzerland before reaching Italy. If flying to Milan and hiring a car, the route to Gressoney will take you around two hours via the A4, the A5 and the SS26 to the resort.

By train, catch the Eurostar from London Waterloo or Ashford in Kent to Paris. Transfer on to the all night train to Turin, which takes around 5 hours, 30 minutes. The Eurostar should take around 2 hours, 30 minutes from London to Paris. From Turin, catch a train service to Pont St Martin and the bus service to the resort, 18kms away.

Turin is the nearest international airport to Gressoney and is located just 80kms and a one-hour drive away. Direct flights are available from London, and you can hire a car or use the transfer service available from the airport to the resort. There is also an airport at Milan, 164kms from the resort, with flights direct from London.
