Travel to Les Gets with travel insurance from Essential Travel

A typically Savoyard village set in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, Les Gets is a peaceful getaway with a reputation for good snowfall and some of the densest skiing in the area. The resort, set at a low altitude of around 1,200m, is a peaceful haven and has all the magic of an authentic ski village, ensuring visitors return again and again.

The village of Les Gets is a charming spot with a genuine unspoilt Alpine atmosphere. A compact village of two main streets running up to a pretty church, typical Alpine chalets and lodges, plus a subdued, friendly nightlife and good après-ski facilities makes Les Gets a great choice for families.

There are 65 runs adding up to 120kms of pistes at this snow-sure resort, the longest being 11kms. Eleven runs are for the advanced, 26 are suitable for intermediates and 28 for beginners. The village sits at a low 1,200m in comparison to other resorts, while the highest lift reaches 2,400m. There are 53 lifts servicing the area. Additionally, there is a snow park for snowboarders.

Les Gets is part of the Portes du Soleil, meaning 13 ski resorts and a further 530kms of pistes are accessible from the village. Les Gets is linked via shuttle bus to the rest of the area, which offers a livelier alternative and busier après-ski. Cultural events, including exhibitions and local music, are offered within each resort.

Skiing here is from mid-December to late April with an almost guaranteed snowfall throughout the area. Rates remain the same throughout the season here with no-fuss ski passes on offer.

Skiing in Les Gets

The resort of Les Gets has an authentic Alpine flavour and charm, making it a pleasant option when choosing from the 14 resorts that make up the area known as the Porte du Soleil. A subdued but reassuring atmosphere combined with access to over 650kms of slopes ensures a great ski experience in a perfectly tranquil setting.

Described as a peaceful haven, Les Gets appeals to families as well as those looking for an authentic Alpine experience. Sitting at 1,200m, the resort is easily accessible and offers plenty of genuine chalets and cabins as accommodation. The two main streets run up to a pretty church while guiding you past some of the restaurants, bars and cafés, all serving traditional food. However, with one nightclub in the village, don’t expect a rowdy crowd at the resort.

There are 65 slopes at Les Gets, adding up to a total piste length of 120kms. The area is serviced by 53 lifts, with the highest at 2,400m and the lowest at 1,000m, and a total vertical descent of 1,002m. Forty per cent of the slopes are suitable for beginners with 45 per cent for intermediate and 15 per cent for experts. There are 18kms of cross-country ski routes and one snowboard park at the resort. As part of the Porte du Soleil, Les Gets offers a further 540kms of great skiing in the area.

The season at Les Gets runs from mid-December through late April with passes available at the same price throughout the season.

The easiest way to get to Les Gets is to travel by air to Geneva International Airport and take a 90-minute transfer by road to the resort. The high-speed TGV train arrives direct from Paris to Cluses in just three hours; alternatively, catch the Eurostar direct from London Waterloo or Ashford in Kent to Bourg-St Maurice, then travel up along the A41 to Geneva before heading to the resort via the A40. Check for operation days as they change during the season.

Apres-ski in Les Gets

Away from the ski area, Les Gets keeps it low-key when it comes to après-ski and alternative entertainment. There are a small number of bars and restaurants in the village, with some of the restaurants perched on the mountain; there is also a nightclub for those who won’t sleep. Some non-ski activities on offer include ice-skating, bowling, swimming and parapenting. You can also enjoy lovely walking and biking trails; alternatively, a cinema shows the latest films.

There are 28 restaurants in the village serving traditional meals, along with 12 bars and a nightclub. Although not a busy place, Les Gets offers some alternative activities such as ice-skating, bowling, swimming, and parapenting. There are also walking and biking trails. Transportation to Les Gets

Les Gets is 55kms or about 90 minutes by road from Geneva, and 22kms from the most convenient train station at Cluses. However, the resort itself is only accessible by car and so a combination of either plane or rail, plus a short road journey are the most practical means of getting to the resort.

For easy road access from Calais, follow the A6 autotroute from Paris down to the Cluses exit, and then follow the A40 and the signs to Les Gets. The journey will take around nine hours and cost about €100 in road tolls. The road from Geneva International Airport is the A40, from where signs can be followed to the resort.

Cluses train station is a short 22kms from Les Gets and is serviced by the TGV high-speed train direct from Paris, taking around three hours total travel time. Buses are readily available to transfer you to the resort.

Alternatively, catch the Eurostar direct from London Waterloo or Ashford in Kent to Bourg-St Maurice, then travel up along the A41 to Geneva before heading to the resort via the A40. Check for operation days as they change during the season. From London, the Eurostar offers a direct service to Bourge-St Maurice and Aime-La-Plange on Fridays and Saturdays (overnighter), taking about 10 hours.

Geneva International Airport has several low budget flights, while Cluses rail station is serviced by the high-speed TGV train from Paris. The Eurostar direct from London will get you to the area where you can take a short transfer to the resort.

Geneva International Airport is 55kms from Les Gets, about a 90-minute journey by car. Alternatively, catch one of the regular Altibus connections from the airport direct to Les Gets (tel: +41 227 982 000). Taxis are also available from the airport for a higher fee. Lyon and Chambery international airports are both located in the region, but require alternate transfer options
