Some superb off-piste trails can also be found in addition to the variety of ski slopes at the resort, which is located 90kms south of Salzburg city.Situated at an altitude of 1,740m above sea level, the village of Obertauern is uniquely positioned in a beautiful setting. About 6,500 beds are offered in everything from two- to four-star hotels, apartments, guesthouses, excellent bed-and-breakfasts, and other lodgings. Unlike other Austrian Alpine towns, Obertauern adds to its appeal with skiers by being a lot quieter, although the resort offers plenty of restaurants, cafés, bars and discos. All levels of ability are catered for at Obertauern, which has 120kms of manicured pistes suitable for beginners, as well as intermediate through to advanced and expert skiers. Around 34,760 skiers per hour are transported by 26 modern ski lifts which include a gondola, chairlifts and T-bars. A kindergarten is also available at the resort, which has 70 instructors at six ski schools offering Alpine, cross-country and snowboarding tuition. The Katschberg and Aineck mountain ranges to the south of Obertauern offer several other alternative ski slopes at quality ski resorts. The Pöllatal Nature Park is also nearby; while Mautendorf, with its magnificent castle, is one of the charming hamlets in the area and should not be missed. The birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg boasts numerous palaces, castles, art collections, churches and parks and is one of the most beautiful European historic cities. The Obertauern ski season runs from late November to early May, with the week up until December 19, the last three weeks of January and the period later on in the season offering the cheapest rates. Flying to Salzburg International Airport (90kms north) is the easiest way of getting to the Obertauern, with shuttles and hire vehicles available to take you to the resort Skiing in ObertauernAn Alpine paradise, Obertauern ski resort is situated at the top of the Radstadter Pass, a vertical study of Austria’s more diverse mountains that sits at 2,350m above sea level. The opportunity to ski the north side and return via the south side, or vice versa, on the quality pistes which surround Obertauern is popular with skiers of all abilities.Obertauern’s 120kms of pistes offer a well balanced level of ski runs and include: 20 per cent suitable for beginners; 30 per cent intermediate; 30 per cent advanced; and 20 per cent expert. Over 34,000 skiers per hour are up lifted by 26 ski lifts, while an additional 10kms of cross-country trails and ski touring are also available at the resort. The best conditions at the resort are from mid-February to mid-March, during the season, which lasts over five months. The two weeks before Christmas, the last three weeks of January and the end of the season offer the cheapest rates. Flying to Salzburg and taking a shuttle to the resort is the best way of getting to Obertauern when not on a package holiday. A bus from the airport to the train station and then a train and bus combination is another option. Apres-ski in ObertauernObertauern village offers families and those looking for a quieter and unhurried ski experience a laid-back atmosphere, set at 1,740m above sea level. Slope-side hotels are among the myriad accommodation options available, which also include 118 hotels and guesthouses, pensions, apartments and hostels.Transportation to ObertauernThere are a number of ways to get to the ski resort of Obertauern, located south of the provincial capital of Salzburg. A flight to Salzburg and a shuttle to the resort is the most convenient way of arriving, while a train all the way from London with several connections, or self-drive are alternative options.By car to Obertauern, the journey is 1,200kms from Calais along main, tolled autoroutes, with a travel time of two days. If driving from Salzburg International Airport, take the A-10 (Salzburg) autobahn south, exiting on to the B-99 (east) at junction 63. By train, you can travel to Radstadt station, south of Salzburg, from London, with the last leg of the journey to Obertauern by bus or taxi. A Eurostar service from London Waterloo leaves daily for Paris gare du Nord at 17:09. An overnight train to Munich leaves Paris gare de l’Est, with a regular Eurocity train to Salzburg from Munich. Change here for the last train connection to Radstadt. Scheduled and charter flights from Europe and a number of worldwide destinations service the nearest international airport at Salzburg. Shuttles to Obertauern go from the airport, while a transfer to the city will allow connection with a bus service to the resort. A train from the city as far as Radstadt will also allow a bus connection. A train from Munich International Airport to Salzburg with a change to Radstadt is another option.
