Brixen im Thale is located in the northeast part of the state of Tyrol and is one of nine villages in the region. The Wilder Kaiser - Brixen Valley is lift-linked by a colossal lift system, making it the largest connected ski area in Austria, known as the Ski-Welt. This area offers a huge range of on- and off-piste skiing and snowboarding.

Brixen im Thale is a traditional and historical Alpine town with some terrific ancient architecture, notably the 8th century Gothic church, Pfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, and some beautiful old farmhouses. Nestled amid gently rolling hills, Brixen im Thale also boasts modern facilities and authentic hospitality. A good complement of shops completes this superb resort town.

The Ski-Welt region has 250kms of fantastic runs, with all levels of skiers catered for, and an emphasis on the beginner and intermediate. An array of 94 lift systems, including chairlifts, draglifts, gondolas, cable cars and child pulls provide access to all pistes across the 1,100m of vertical terrain; the longest run at Brixen being 4.5kms.

The ski season at Brixen im Thale / Wilder Kaiser ski resort runs from mid-December to mid-March, with discounted rates at the beginning and towards the end of the season. Munich offers the most convenient point of entry by air and rail, and both trains and buses go from the airport to the resort.


Skiing in Brixen im Thale

Located in the north of Tyrol, Brixen im Thale / Wilder Kaiser ski resort has a huge 250kms of varied pistes interconnected by the largest ski lift system in Austria. Brixen im Thale is more laid-back than some of its counterparts, which adds to its appeal.

There are 250kms of runs in the Ski-Welt area, comprised of 122kms of beginner and intermediate pistes, 108kms of upper intermediate and advanced pistes and 20kms for expert skiers and snowboarders. The vertical descent of the ski field is 1,100m, and 94 lift systems operate over this terrain to supply all slopes. The longest run in Brixen im Thale is 4.5kms. Off-piste powder is available for thrill-seekers and superb cross-country terrain is also presented.

Other winter activities and facilities at the Brixen im Thale / Wilder Kaiser ski resort include: a snowboard playground; snowshoeing; tobogganing; hiking; curling; horse-drawn sleigh rides; and natural ice-skating. There is also indoor tennis and swimming, and a fitness centre. Après-ski in Brixen is provided by a range of restaurants and cafés, seven coffeehouses, folklore evenings, concerts, four bars, two discos and a casino.

This delightful old town has the 8th century Pfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt Church at its heart and a scattering of lovely old farmhouses and several modern boutiques and clothing stores. Quality accommodation can be had in traditional hotels and farmhouses, as well as some atmospheric mountain huts.

The mid-December to mid-March ski season at Brixen im Thale / Wilder Kaiser has its best snow from February to early March and special pre-Christmas holiday and end of season deals. Brixen im Thale is best reached by flying to Munich and taking a train or bus to the resort, or hiring a car.

Apres-ski in Brixen im Thale

There are 3,000 beds in all categories in Brixen (24,000 beds in the region), featuring quality hotels, guesthouses, pensions, holiday apartments, farmhouses, and campsites. There are 65 mountain huts and inns in the ski arena, two ski schools and snow bars; while back in the town, there are numerous restaurants, bars and discos, as well as coffeehouses and a casino.

For alternative skiing, nearby Kitzbuhel offers 50 slopes, ranging from baby runs to the world’s most difficult downhill. The typical Tyrolean village is delightful and features old-style wooden houses and a historic centre. Other resorts include Kirchberg, St Johann im Tyrol and Oberndorf. Innsbruck and Salzburg are also close at hand and offer a super break from the slopes.

Transportation to Brixen im Thale

Brixen im Thale / Wilder Kaiser ski resort is conveniently located near major airports and has a rail station. Situated 80kms east of Innsbruck and 125kms south of Munich, Brixen im Thale is most conveniently accessed by flying to Innsbruck or Munich and hiring a car, while rail travel and self-drive are also popular travel options.

By road, Brixen im Thale is accessible via the (A-12) Inn Valley autobahn at junction 17 to Worgl, from where route B-170 goes to the resort. Brixen is 435kms from Vienna and 965kms from Paris, and the quickest route from Calais takes in the A-26, A-4, A-5, A-8, A-93 and A-12 autoroutes and autobahns across France and Germany (1,100kms; 10 to 11 hours).

By train from London, take the Eurostar to Paris (gare du Nord) from Waterloo station and transfer to gare de l’Est via the metro. A direct overnight train then goes to Munich, arriving early the next morning, and Eurocity trains go on to Worgl. You can take the short hop from Worgl to Brixen im Thale on the Salzach Sprinter. TGV trains also go to Geneva from Paris, from where services carry on to Zürich, then Innsbruck, Worgl and Brixen.

The nearest airport is Innsbruck Airport and if time is of the essence, you can hire a car at the airport. Salzburg and Munich airports are also within reach. All airports have convenient bus and train connections to Brixen, and Munich has the most flight options.

There is a regular free Skibus service connecting Brixen with the other eight ski resort villages in the valley.
