Travel to Altenmarkt Zauchensee with travel insurance from Essential Travel

Located in the province of Salzburg, and south of city of the same name, Altenmarkt / Zauchensee ski resort is one of nine ski areas in the Salzburger Sport World. It is a compact ski resort with an impressive range of ski terrain that is interconnected with the other resorts.

Altenmarkt is a charming old market village with a 14th century parish church and another church of Gothic and late Baroque styles, while Zauchensee is a modern purpose-built resort village with slope-side accommodation. The locals are very friendly at both villages and facilities include ski schools, sports shops and banks.

Skiing and snowboarding at Altenmarkt / Zauchensee ski resort is mainly aimed at those at a beginner and intermediate skill level. There are 350kms of prepared slopes that stretch over 1,332m of vertical terrain, the longest run of which is 4.5kms. Hundreds of lifts operate over all slopes and can move thousands of people per hour.

For alternative skiing and snowboarding, there are a further 450kms of slopes in the region. Away from the slopes, Salzburg is one of the most beautiful European historic cities and the birthplace of Mozart. Squeezed between the River Salzach and the mighty rock of the Hohensalzburg, Salzburg delights the stroller with its narrow streets, onion spires, sculptured fountains, and wrought-iron shop signs.

The ski season at Altenmarkt / Zauchensee runs from December to May, with cheaper weeks available at the beginning and end of the season and in mid-January. The most convenient way to get to Altenmarkt / Zauchensee ski resort is to fly to Salzburg or Munich and hire a car; public transport is also available from these airports.


Skiing in Altenmarkt Zauchensee

Interconnected with some of the other nine ski resorts in the region, Altenmarkt / Zauchensee has a huge arsenal of ski and snowboard terrain, with 350kms of slopes to itself. Facilities are top-rate and the addition of off-piste powder and cross-country trails ensures a great variety.

Altenmarkt / Zauchensee ski resort’s 350kms of terrain is serviced by an array of lift systems and is divided into 33 per cent beginner runs, 54 per cent intermediate and 13 per cent advanced and expert runs. The longest run is 4.5kms. Snowboarding alternatives include one terrain park and there are also 220kms of cross-country skiing in the region.

The December to May ski season at Altenmarkt / Zauchensee ski resort has its best snow in February and special rates in mid-December, mid-January and April. Most travellers fly to Salzburg or Munich and transfer by train to Altenmarkt.

Other winter activities and facilities include: mono-skiing; horse-drawn sleigh riding; curling; indoor swimming and tennis; a sports centre; a fitness centre; squash; a solarium; and a sauna. For après-ski, there is a folk museum; restaurants, on and off the mountain; ice bars; regular bars; and three discos.

The villages of Altenmarkt and Zauchensee are separated by a couple of kilometres and are very different. Altenmarkt is a traditional old town with attractive churches, while Zauchensee is purpose-built and modern. There are 4,500 beds in hotels, inns, bed-and-breakfasts, farms, private houses, apartments, youth hostels and campsites.

Accommodation is available in all categories, from modest to luxury hotels, to chalets, pensions and traditional farmhouses, with 4,500 beds on offer (32,000 in the region). Sleigh riding, swimming and tennis are some of the non-ski activities available and there are several excellent restaurants, cafés, bars and discos that provide a moderate to lively après-ski.

Transportation to Altenmarkt Zauchensee

Altenmarkt / Zauchensee ski resort is located 75kms south of Salzburg in the province of Salzburg and is fully accessible by road and rail. The most practical way here is to fly to Salzburg or Munich and transfer by train to Altenmarkt, while self-drive is a popular option due to easy motorway access; alternatively, international rail travel is also convenient.

Altenmarkt / Zauchensee is conveniently located near the (A-10/E-55) Salzburg-Villach autobahn and is well connected with the rest of the European motorway network. If you are coming from the UK, the quickest route from Calais bypasses the cities of Reims, Metz, Strasbourg (France), Stuttgart, Munich (Germany) and Salzburg. Drive south on the A-10 from here and take exit 74 for the resort (1,180kms; 11 hours).

Altenmarkt train station is accessible from Salzburg, Graz and Radstadt. If you’re travelling from London, regular Eurostar trains leave from Waterloo station to Brussels-Midi, from where an Intercity Express goes to Frankfurt. There is then another service to Salzburg, from where regional trains go to Altenmarkt.

Salzburg Airport is the nearest and is the main gateway to Altenmarkt / Zauchensee ski resort; there are regular shuttles to Salzburg train station, from where regional train leaves for Altenmarkt. The resort is only 45 minutes away by hire car. Munich-FJ Strauss Airport has more flight options and is furnished with a rail terminal.

Altenmarkt and Zauchensee are connected by Skibuses that regularly ply the 10-kilometre route.
