Travel to Selwyn Snowfields with ski insurance from Essential Travel

Selwyn Snowfields is a family-orientated resort with plenty of gentle slopes as well as dedicated toboggan and tubing runs with their own chairlifts. It is the best resort for beginners in New South Wales, with the bulk of the runs aimed at those who are just starting to learn how to ski, while the cost of chairlift tickets is almost half that of the larger resorts, adding to the resort’s appeal.

Unfortunately, Selwyn Snowfields offers no on-snow accommodation; the nearest resort accommodation is located a half-hour drive away. However, there are ample facilities for day visitors including ski and clothing hire, a restaurant, children’s centre and a great ski school.

A total of 12 chairlifts provide access to 110 acres of skiable terrain at an hourly rate of 9,500 skiers. Selwyn’s gentle trails are suitable for beginners, with a number of more challenging runs on offer for intermediate skiers. Admittedly, the resort’s few expert runs do not meet the same standard as those at some of Australia’s other resorts, although the wide range of runs here will keep everyone entertained. Families will enjoy the dedicated toboggan and snow tubing parks, while 30 miles of marked cross country trails are also on offer.

There is no accommodation available at Selwyn ski resort, with the slopes open to day-trippers only. The nearest accommodation to the ski resort is a half-hour drive away. Ample car parking is available adjacent to the friendly base lodge, home to a fine restaurant, clothing shop and a ski patrol.

If you aspire for more challenging runs, then Perisher Blue and Thredbo are 50 and 55 miles away respectively. For a break from the slopes, the nearby town of Adaminaby is an interesting place to explore.

Improved snowmaking facilities means that good cover can be enjoyed for most of the official season, which runs from June until October. The resort offers half-price chairlift tickets towards the start and end of the ski season, while access to Selwyn Snowfields is by car only.

Skiing in Selwyn Snowfields

Selwyn Snowfields is an extremely popular day-only family ski resort, offering a multitude of well-groomed, gentle ski runs, dedicated tobogganing and tubing runs, and an excellent ski school. Located in the northern part of Kosciusko National Park, Selwyn offers spectacular scenery and great beginner skiing.

Forty per cent of the trails here are marked as beginner, another 48 per cent as intermediate and just 12 per cent as advanced, although in reality an experienced skier will not experience any challenges here. A total of 12 chairlifts give access to 110 acres of skiable terrain, with the longest run a respectable 4,920 feet. There is a small terrain park, along with snow tubing and a toboggan-only park, while there are also nearly 30 miles of graded cross country trails.

Selwyn Snowfields is a small, day-only ski resort where families come to enjoy the snow and ply the gentle slopes on skis, snowboards, toboggans and tubes. When you have finished a day of skiing in Selwyn Snowfields, you can enjoy the limited après ski, which includes a restaurant serving up tasty meals. Nightlife is restricted to guests’ lodgings, the nearest of which is half an hour away by car, while towns such as Adaminaby are home to a number of restaurants and country pubs.

The ski season runs from June through to October, with the best conditions usually occurring in July and August. Half price chairlift tickets are available towards either end of the season, with good snowmaking facilities and the rock-free base ensuring many of the runs stay open for a surprisingly long time.
