Travel to Lake Mountain with ski insurance from Essential Travel

Lake Mountain is a dedicated cross country ski resort and is among the most visited resorts of its type in the world. Its high mountain plateau is covered with a huge range of marked trails suitable for all levels of skiers, while it also boasts a fun snow play area and toboggan runs. Only a two-hour drive from the centre of Melbourne, the ski resort in Lake Mountain is popular among day-trippers and family groups.

Lake Mountain is a family-orientated ski resort, while also being the country’s premier cross country skiing destination. It is home to friendly staff and a good range of basic facilities that will make your trip as enjoyable as possible, including ski hire and a renowned ski school.

A total of ten well-marked cross country trails are graded from beginner to expert level, making up a total of 23 miles of world-class trails for visitors to explore. Also on offer are a number of toboggan runs and a large snow play area. The total skiable area is a whopping 5,930 acres.

Lake Mountain ski resort is a day-only resort with no on-snow accommodation available. The nearest accommodation is at the town of Marysville, a 20-minute drive away. The base lodge here is home to a heated restaurant and bar, while numerous public shelters and coin-operated BBQs are also available.

The Marysville region surrounding Lake Mountain offers stunning scenery, great for exploring by car. Marysville itself is a charming and historic town with a number of activities and events on offer all year round, as well as interesting shopping.

The ski season runs from mid-June through to early October, with seniors able to claim half price fees from Monday to Friday. The most convenient way to get here is to drive, with a journey time of just two hours from Melbourne.

Skiing in Lake Mountain

Lake Mountain is Australia’s premier cross country ski resort and one of the most popular resorts of its kind in the world. Along with an extensive collection of cross country trails, it also offers a great snow play area and several toboggan runs, making it a good family destination.

A total of ten world-class cross country trails combine to offer 23 miles of cross country bliss. There is a wide choice in levels of difficulty, with 38 per cent designated as beginner, 34 per cent as intermediate and 28 per cent as advanced runs. There are also seven toboggan runs to choose from and the total skiable area is a massive 5,930 acres, with a base elevation of 4,725 feet.

As a small, family-orientated ski resort with no on-snow accommodation available, après-ski here is limited to the newly renovated restaurant and bar which offers visitors delicious food and refreshments in a lovely heated environment. Nearby Marysville boasts more après-ski activities, with a number of pubs, restaurants and bistros on offer.

Skiing in Lake Mountain is best during the official ski season, which runs from mid-June through to early October, with the best snowfall usually occurring during July and August. Driving is the most convenient form of transportation for getting here, while coach packages from Melbourne are also popular.

Transportation to Lake Mountain

Lake Mountain offers an expansive plateau on which some of Australia’s best cross country trails are located. Being only 75 miles from the centre of Melbourne, it offers the closest reliable snow to the city and is a popular daytrip destination for city folk.

The drive from Melbourne through the Yarra Valley to Marysville and up to Lake Mountain offers stunning scenery and a number of attractions along the way. Leaving Melbourne, take the Maroondah highway to Marysville, from where the Woods Point-Lake Mountain road leads up to the resort.

Melbourne International Airport services flights from across Australia as well as numerous international flights. Car hire is available at the airport for the scenic drive up to Lake Mountain.

Alternative forms of transport include coach services, which leave regularly from Melbourne and are a great way to sit back and relax, while a Snow Bus also operates from Marysville, connecting the town with Lake Mountain on weekends, school holidays and other days if there is sufficient demand.
