Travel to Falls Creek with ski insurance from Essential Travel

Falls Creek village sits above the snowline, offering ski-in ski-out lodging with an authentic alpine resort atmosphere. Chairlifts give skiers access to both sides of the mountain and an excellent range of runs over varied terrain, while an extensive beginners’ area keeps newcomers entertained. With widespread snowmaking facilities and a lively après-ski scene, Falls Creek remains one of the most popular ski resorts in the country.

The ski resorts in Falls Creek boast a true alpine feeling and the constant cover of snow of the nearby slopes means you can ski or board anywhere you like. A full range of facilities are on offer here, including a general store, medical centre, childcare facilities, post office, bank, ski and snowboard hire and a great ski school.

Much of the skiing at Falls Creek is aimed at intermediate level skiers, with an enticing range of terrain and access to both sides of the mountain. A number of more challenging expert runs as well as off-piste terrain keep the more experienced skiers happy, while a large bowl is perfect for beginners.

Few ski resorts in Australia can boast the range of ski-in ski-out lodgings that Falls Creek can. Due to Fall Creek’s location above the snowline and next to a large lake, the ski resorts provide endless fodder for snowmaking operations. A generous selection of restaurants, bars and cafés is on offer, along with a heated pool, sauna, massage services and a full range of non-skiing activities.

The official ski season starts in early June and continues into early October, with prices remaining the same for the entire season. The easiest way to get here is to drive, with the roads being cleared of snow daily.

Skiing in Falls Creek

Located in the Snowy Mountains of northeast Victoria, the popularity of Falls Creek is largely due to its authentic alpine atmosphere and position above the snowline, meaning ski-in ski-out accommodation and plenty of fresh powder covering diverse terrain.

Skiing trails are spread out on both sides of the mountain, with 17 per cent designated for beginners, 60 per cent for intermediates and 23 per cent for expert skiers. The village is situated in a large bowl and chairlifts give access to the ridgeline, 1,112 acres of skiable terrain and plenty of off-piste options. The longest run is around two miles long, while there are also a number of terrain parks, a snowtube park, half pipes, toboggan run and over 12 miles of groomed cross country trails.

Falls Creek offers a myriad of non-skiing activities including snowbikes, snowmobiles and snowtubes, as well as an indoor heated pool, spa, sauna and exercise facilities. There is a great variety of bars and pubs to keep you entertained well into the night, many serving up delicious local wines, while fine dining is offered by a number of restaurants and cafés, many boasting spectacular views.

Skiing in Falls Creek is complemented by a full range of facilities including ski and snowboard hire, childcare facilities, a professional ski school, a range of shops and a medical centre. Nestled high up in Victoria’s High Country, it’s one of the few alpine ski resorts in the country.

The official ski season runs from early June to early October, with the best snowfalls usually occurring during July and August. Driving is a popular option for getting to and from Falls Creek and the drive is spectacular, while coaches that connect with air and rail services are also popular.

Transportation to Falls Creek

Falls Creek is located in northeastern Victoria near the town of Mount Beauty, an 18-mile drive away. It is relatively easy to get to, with number of transportation connections on offer including air, rail, coach and car, the latter being the most popular.

The drive to Falls Creek is a scenic one and doesn’t present a major challenge. Roads are cleared of snow daily and although chains are not usually required, it is compulsory to carry them just in case. The drive from Melbourne takes a little over 4 hours; entry fees are collected at Howman’s Gap Entry Gate and plenty of parking is available at the resort itself.

Countrylink trains depart daily from Sydney and Melbourne for Albury, where connecting buses wait to transport passengers up to the slopes. There are regular daily coaches to Falls Creek during the ski season from Melbourne, Albury and Mount Beauty.

Albury Airport services daily flights from Sydney and Melbourne during the ski season; there are connecting bus and shuttle transfers from the airport to Falls Creek. Car hire is also available.
