Visit Birmingham with single trip travel insurance from Essential Travel

Over the last few years the UK’s second largest city has undergone a rather dramatic change, shaking off its industrial, grey image and become a centre for arts – it’s bidding to be the European Capital of Culture 2008 – and clubbing, not to mention serious shopping. So jump in your car and start exploring this sprawling conurbation.

Single trip to Birmingham - Wining, Dining & Sleeping

Britain’s second city does have some smart hotels in fantastic locations – so make the most of you’re weekend by staying the night in one of them.

The Malmaison is a stylish place to stay a relaxed and chic bar that’s worth drinking in even if you’re not a guest. And one of the best reasons for getting a room here is that it’s set within the Mailbox – so you can pop back to drop of your designer purchases throughout the day!

Although it’s nowhere near as design-oriented, the attraction of the Hyatt Regency is most certainly its panoramic view of the city. A 24-story hotel with floor-to-ceiling windows in every room– it’s well worth paying a little extra for a room on level 22 or 23. If you do you can utilise the Regency Club Lounge on these floors where you’ll be served complimentary breakfast as well as drinks and canapés for a couple of hours every evening.

If it’s a pampering weekend you’re after stay at the Hotel Du Vin, it has a gorgeous health spa and gym facilities as well as a couple of nice bars and bistro. And as for the marble bathrooms in each of the rooms, they are truly luxurious.

So you’ve dropped off your car, put on your glad rags and now it’s time to show them off with a top night out.

Head down to the Custard Factory in Digbeth for an artsy, cool night out as this exciting arts and media centre is home to much of Birmingham’s creative talent. The Café des Artistes is a popular pre-club venue and the stylish Medicine Bar offers something different every night, from bands, to dance nights, to art launches, to you name it.

The balti is Brum’s gastronomic speciality and it is worth visiting an authentic balti house to sample this delicious Indian dish. For the real experience, go to Ladypool Road in Sparkhill – this is balti central! Al Faisal on nearby Stoney Lane offers a traditional feast. However if it’s a classy Indian meal you’re after try Shimla Pinks on Broad Street, here you’ll get sumptuous contemporary cuisine in stylish, retro surroundings.

Sometimes you need a full-on tacky night out and Broad Street is the right place for it. This formerly run-down street now resembles a main strip of Magaluf with street vendors selling useless fluorescent things and hen parties aplenty. Among the usual suspects there are a couple of fun places to check out like late night cocktail joint and eaterie The Living Room.

San Carlo in the center of town is a split-level modern Italian and seafood restaurant where the chefs use deliciously fresh ingredients to create gourmet meals served to you by their Italian waiters. Booking is recommended at this lively and loud eatery.

The Mailbox has more to offer than just shopping – check it out in the evenings for range of cuisine from tapas (Bar Estilo) to Japanese (Shogun Sushi Noodle Bar). And there are plenty of bars too – Bar Room Bar has some decent DJ nights and a regular laid-back Sunday do, and pop in to Bar Epernau to pity the poor pianist on his revolving grand piano.

The fabulously trendy Oozells Square is a great spot, and here you’ll find Raymond Blanc’s Le Petit Blanc for swanky French food in similarly swanky surroundings. In the same square is Café Ikon with its outside dining space and delicious Spanish cuisine, and while you’re here pop upstairs to the Ikon Gallery for a contemporary art fix.

If you fancy a bohemian night out drive a few miles south of the city center to Moseley. This suburb has loads of great bars and bistros to try out. The Cross Café Bar is a good starting point and is lovely to sit outside on a warm summer’s evening. The Bulls Head – which has undergone a recent refurb and is run by the same people that run the Medicine Bar – is also well worth a visit.
