Visit Birmingham with single trip travel insurance from Essential Travel

Over the last few years the UK’s second largest city has undergone a rather dramatic change, shaking off its industrial, grey image and become a centre for arts – it’s bidding to be the European Capital of Culture 2008 – and clubbing, not to mention serious shopping. So jump in your car and start exploring this sprawling conurbation.

Single trip to Birmingham - The Great Outdoors

For such a concrete and land-locked city Birmingham does have some greenery – as well as an awful lot of water – so make sure you take the time to check out what it has to offer.

Stroll along the extensive and recently redeveloped canal system to its hub Gas Street Basin. Here you can jump on a water taxi, go on a boat trip or grab some refreshments at one of the many nearby cafes, bars and restaurants at the Basin or at the nearby Brindley Place.

Southwest of the city is the suburb of Edgbaston and it’s worth driving here to Cannon Hill Park – a large public park with boating lakes, bowling greens and woodland. On a sunny day it’s the perfect spot for a picnic with a group of mates.

Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens house over 15 acres of trees, ponds, plants and tropical greenhouses. It’s a beautiful and tranquil spot to the southwest of the city center and lovely to wander around on a bright summer’s day. While you’re in the area pop to the Barber Institute of Fine Art a small gallery with an excellent selection of art including pieces by Van Gough, Monet and Renoir.

Single trip to Birmingham - Shopping Heaven

If you’re after some serious retail therapy then Birmingham’s the place to max your credit card. It’s now got it’s own Harvey Nics and come September it’ll also have a Selfridges – although this is perhaps anticipated as much for the fabulous space-age silver building it’s going to occupy as for the designer clothes it’s going to sell.

Make the Mailbox your first stop – it’s packed with designer stores including Harvey Nichols, Iceberg and DKNY – and there are plenty of canalside bars and cafes to get some much-needed refreshments while you’re spending all that cash like Budokan and Café Lazeez.

Although it’s such a small street you could almost miss it, a walk up Ethel Street should reap huge benefits. Autograph and A Too are bursting with designer gear while Yo Yo has some cool vintage clothing. Stuff 8 is good if you’re after gift items that are a little bit different.

If it’s loft-style chic you’re after XU Limited on Cornwall Street has a superb range of contemporary furniture and fabulous accessories. Even if the items are out of your price range it will definitely be a great source of inspiration. Check out nearby Ethos for designer flowers and funky gifts.

Just to the northwest of the city centre is the Jewellery Quarter where you’ll find hundreds of jewellery-related companies – walk up Vittoria Street for the best selection of jewellery shops – then wander back to St Paul’s Square for a drink or a bite to eat.
