Visit the Cote D’Azure with single trip travel insurance from Essential TravelIf you are looking for a European beach holiday with a touch of class then the Cote D’Azure is the place to go. Situated on the southern coast of France and very close to the Italian border the Cote D’Azure has a very cosmopolitan feel and stretches for many kilometres taking in a number of towns each with their own feel. Take a single trip to the cote D’Azure – NiceNice is the capital of the Cote D’Azure and is also the fifth largest town on France. It’s position makes it the ideal place to start when exploring the Cote D’Azure. The airport is well serviced from the UK and is situated only a few minutes drive from the main town. In the Eighteenth century the aristocrats of Russia and England built mansions here. Today the town is mostly made up of rentiers and retired people of all nationalities. Nice is built around a huge promenade called the Promenade D’Anglais which stretches along the entire front of the town and overlooks the main beach. The beach is pebbly and the water is a beautiful bright blue. There are literally hundreds of hotels in Nice and you can choose from the opulent luxury of a 5 star hotel overlooking the sea to a more reasonably priced 3 star hotel in the town itself. The town is great for shopping and dining with many boutiques and hundreds of eateries. In the centre of town a little way back from the promenade D’Anglais is the beautiful Jardin Albert with its wonderful flowers and lawns which are kept a luscious green by hundreds of underground sprinklers. Just beyond this is the market area of the Rue St. Francois De Paule with many stalls selling local arts, crafts and antiques.. The market is surrounded by yet more restaurants and bars with great seafood available. At the end of the Rue St. Francois De Paule is the rock upon which sits the park of Le Chateau. The park of Le Chateau can be accessed by lift from the Tour Bellanda or by footpath from the Rue de Providence. Surprisingly there is no Chateau as this was destroyed by the French in the early eighteenth century when Nice belonged to Savoy. It is here where Nice began as the ancient city of Nikea – a Greek city. Mosaics and stone vases can be seen here in homage to that period. The views from the park of Le Chateau are stunning with the scrambled rooftops of Vieux Nice leading down to the Promenade D’Anglais which sweeps away into the distance. Beyond this is the Mediterranean sea and the smooth arc of the Bay of Angels which carries on to Antibes Just along the Promenade D’Anglais and around the headland is the Bassin Lympia port which is home to many boats and is surrounded by restaurants. All in all Nice is a great place to visit and is an ideal base for exploring the Cote D’Azure.
