Monaco and Monte Carlo.Monaco is at sea level and consists of a harbour which is home to many huge yachts, with restaurants, hotels and shops adorning the surrounding streets. There are a surprising number of mid range hotels to be found in this area of town and the position of Monaco centre is great for exploration of both the town itself and the beach which is located just around the harbour to the east. The beach is fairly small but is sandy and ideal for a day of relaxation. Monte Carlo is set up on the hill and consists mainly of Casino Square. Casino Square is home to the Grand Casino which is located at the southern end of the square overlooking the sea. The Casino is surprisingly welcoming to tourists and you don’t have to be James Bond to enjoy an evening there. The dress code is smart casual so a shirt and trousers for men and a casual dress for women is perfectly acceptable attire. The main gambling room is large and consists mainly of roulette and blackjack tables. There are a couple of bars on the outer edges of the gambling room where you can celebrate or commiserate your luck. Casino square is full of beautiful flower gardens and fountains. Parking is easy as there is a huge underground car park underneath the square itself. To the east of the Casino is the most famous restaurant in Monte Carlo – the Café De Paris. The Café De Paris is a huge art deco affair which specialises in al fresco dining and has a beautiful open air dining area. Music is supplied live by on stage performers and the food, wine and service are excellent. If you prefer to eat indoors the Café De Paris also has a large indoor dining area which is also beautifully decorated. The Café De Paris isn’t cheap but is highly recommended as a treat while you are in Monte Carlo. To the west of the Casino lies the Hotel De Paris. This is a strictly high budget affair but boasts the best location in the whole of Monte Carlo. The Hotel De Paris has many balconies overlooking Casino Square itself so you will always be right in the middle of the action.
