Roller blading or in-line skating is a popular activity that can be enjoyed almost anywhere. It is used as a mode of transportation by some while it is mostly used for sport and recreational purposes by others. Depending on the area where you are vacationing (laws, rules, regulations, or restrictions), you can use roller blades to go around the block, cruise along smooth pavements, and explore the city. There is a risk of falling, slipping, crashing, and colliding when roller blading however, so make sure you have your travel insurance with you.
There are various injuries, often fractures, associated with roller blading. Most injuries are sustained by those who were not wearing proper protective gear and safety equipment. The most common injuries are sustained by falling forward with arms outstretched, resulting in fractures of the distal radius and injuries to the upper limb. Another common scenario is falling backwards, resulting in back and head injuries. Injury is also sustained from falling sideways, often with a twisting force affecting the lower limbs. This results in ankle sprains and meniscus injuries to the knee. While these injuries may seem minor, they can disable you temporarily. You may need immediate medical attention, hospitalization, and even surgery and rehabilitation in some cases.
Roller blading is considered a Grade 1 risk sport. If you plan to go roller blading while on vacation (especially in another country), secure sports travel insurance first.
