River canoeing (up to Grade 3)

River canoeing is a fun and adventurous activity that you can enjoy with friends during travel. It requires teamwork - all of you have to work in synergy to have a successful ride. In most cases, part of the fun is falling out of the boat, which can sometimes get dangerous. So when engaging in this activity, make sure you have your travel insurance with you.

There are different types of river canoeing - the more adventurous whitewater, playboating, and canoe camping (combines river canoeing with camping). You paddle the canoe while sitting with your legs in front of you. The river's rapids help propel you forward (or backward) but the direction of the canoe is controlled by you. All riding the boat are required to wear safety vests or jackets because falling off the canoe is almost a sure thing - this is considered a part of the sport.

River canoeing is not all fun and games however; it is important to be knowledgeable about the risks involved in this sport. The common injuries sustained in river canoeing include sprains, blisters, fractures, and lacerations. These injuries usually result from falling off the boat. Some injuries - usually in the wrist, back, and shoulders - can develop while you are paddling.

River canoeing is considered a Grade 1 (up to Grade 3) risk sport, with a low to high chance for injury, depending on the form of river canoeing. It is highly advised to obtain travel insurance when engaging in this activity.
