Orienteering

If you're spending your vacation in a foreign country, one of the best ways to explore the place is orienteering. A type of running sport, orienteering involves navigating an area, usually on foot, using a map and compass. It is a fairly new sport, but quickly gaining in popularity because of its many benefits. It's an excellent form of exercise, develops mental alertness and resourcefulness, and provides an opportunity to meet new people. Orienteering is not without some risks, though, so it's a good idea to fix your travel insurance if you want to try it out.

The risks of orienteering depend largely on the mode and type of course. Cuts, scratches and bruises are some of the most common injuries, usually resulting from falls or brushing against rocks or undergrowth. Variants like mountain bike and ski orienteering carry added risks because of the heavier equipment. Falling off the bike or skis can cause sprains, broken bones, dislocations, and sometimes even head injuries. Although most cases are treatable, they can cost you a lot if you are not covered by insurance.

Many countries offer great orienteering sites, and some even have clubs that are open to tourists. If you're a beginner, try looking for a beginner course and travel with a group or guide, so that you can learn the basics and avoid getting lost or injured.

Orienteering is considered a grade 1 risk sport, making it fairly safe compared to other activities. Still, we recommend getting travel insurance so you can better enjoy your vacation without worrying about medical costs.
