Travel insurance for Mexican travel valid after ban
27 May 2009The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) ban on all non-essential travel to Mexico has been lifted.
An advisory from the FCO had been in place to dissuade travellers from unnecessary trips to Mexico, after confirmation of an outbreak of swine flu on April 23rd, 2009.
Insurance for holidaymakers, which has been invalid for travel to the South American country, will now be available following the FCO announcement.
The FCO said: "Following a decline in the number of reported new swine influenza cases in Mexico since its peak on April 26th 2009, we no longer advise against all but essential travel."
What is more, a number of major tour operators are now planning to resume outbound flights to Mexico.
Thompson, First Choice and Thomas Cook have all cancelled flights until May 22nd but in a statement on the Thompson holidays website the travel firm said that it is "planning to begin operations to Mexico once again in the very near future".
In a bid to repair the financial damage that the swine influenza outbreak has caused, the Mexico Tourism Board is planning a revival package which may include a 50 per cent reduction in cruise tax.
