Goa is the cheapest holiday hotspot as travellers can expect to spend just £14.10 per day on the west coast of India, compared to £48.51 in the UK.

That is according to Thomas Cook''s Holiday Cost of Living study, which revealed that the UK is the most expensive place to holiday when compared in a list of 16 countries.

The survey highlighted that the best value destinations, when it comes to daily expenditure, are long and mid-haul non-euro destinations.

Commenting on the top value destinations, Pete Constanti, Thomas Cook chief executive of mainstream travel, said: "There are some fantastic value for money deals available on both holidays and foreign exchange."

He advised travellers who have a reduced budget to "consider an all-inclusive option, [as] this will mean that you''ve paid for food, drinks and some activities in advance".

The architecture in Goa is a mix of Indian, Mughal and Portuguese, as Portugal ruled the state for four centuries.
