Comic Relief climb creates interest in Mount Kilimanjaro
17 March 2009Comic Relief''s celebrity charity climb of Mount Kilimanjaro has generated interest among travellers wanting to visit Tanzania.
That is the view of responsibletravel.com, which has said that people have been "inspired" to climb Mount Kilimanjaro as a result of the coverage the celebrity climb received.
While the company admitted that Tanzania is one of its most popular destinations, it said that it has seen a "massive increase" in demand from tourists wanting to make the trek.
Commenting on the effect of media attention in the area, Krissy Roe, spokesperson for responsibletravel.com, said: "Seeing celebrities climbing a mountain [has had an impact], particularly Cheryl Cole. It''s quite interesting how people have been inspired to try it themselves".
She added that the company had seen an increase "12 times more than normal" and she said "it is huge for us. It has really gone up quite dramatically".
Justin Francis, managing director at responsibletravel.com, explained that the area relies heavily on revenue from tourism, so he said it is important to "ensure as much of the money from your trip as possible remains in the destination".
