Stansted is London''s second busiest airport
Government says yes to Stansted expansion
09 October 2008Plans for the expansion of Stansted airport in Essex have been approved by the government.
Uttlesford District Council had previously blocked the project on the grounds of noise and environmental concerns but the government overruled the council following an appeal by airport operator BAA.
Stansted airport managing director Stewart Wingate said: "We are naturally delighted that the Secretaries of State have granted permission for the next phase of growth at Stansted."
BAA wants to expand the Essex hub in an attempt to increase passenger numbers from 25 million to 35 million a year and flights leaving the airport from 241,000 to 264,000 a year.
"What we can say though is that this is clearly great news for passengers and for businesses, located in the local community or across the wider region," added Mr Wingate.
Stansted airport recently announced that it has received fewer complaints about noise made by the hub''s aircraft.
