Ryanair are introducing mobile phones on flights

In flight mobile call charges may be expensive

07 October 2008

Passengers may be forced to fork out as the cost of in flight mobile phone calls will not be cheap, according to Mott MacDonald.

Laurence Price, director of aviation strategy at Mott MacDonald, said phones on aeroplanes were not anything new and mobile phone networks will charge premium prices.

Mr Price went on to say Ryanair was introducing mobile phones on flights to increase their services because they refused to introduce the fuel surcharge to combat the rise in fuel prices.

"It''s an additional service for some travellers and therefore it is a potential revenue earning stream for a carrier like Ryanair," he added.

At present only passengers signed up to the O2 and 3 networks will be able to use the service, but more are expected to sign up shortly.

O2''s inflight calling charge will vary by destination between £1.65 and £1.99 for making or receiving a call and 40 pence per text.
