Older people have more disposable income
Older generation travel further
02 October 2008Older people are becoming much more adventurous with their holiday destinations, according to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).
Derek Moore, chairman of AITO, explained that the older generation were now more likely to venture out to the southern hemisphere to places like South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
With their children having grown up and being self-sufficient, older people now have the financial ability to holiday in more exotic locations, claims Mr Moore.
Mr Moore went on to say that elderly people used to take domestic holidays as "treats" but now many have a disposable income since retiring they are willing to go further afield.
"South-east Asia and USA are always going to be popular spots, as well as places in North Africa like Morroco, Tunisia, Egypt, right across to the Middle East," he added.
According to the Office for National Statistics'' July 2008 report on ''Overseas travel and tourism'', UK residents'' expenditure abroad increased by four per cent to £9.4 billion.
