Visitors to Edinburgh during the festive period will have an opportunity to see one of Europe''s most beautiful cities at its very best, according to VisitScotland.

Gillian Thomson, a spokesperson for VisitScotland''s ''winter white'' campaign, said that Edinburgh will be illuminated over Christmas by the winter wonderland scheme.

"Edinburgh has so much to offer all through the year but through the festive period it really provides a unique view of Scotland," she said.

Tourists are being urged to visit Princes Street Gardens, as there will be a range of markets, including a German fair selling traditional food, wine and gifts.

The city''s Christmas attractions will be officially opened on November 27th, an occasion known as Edinburgh''s Christmas Light Night.

According to Stripe, the PR company for Edinburgh''s Winter Festival, the capital city is being recognised as one of the most exhilarating places to visit all year round with Christmas and New Year being no exception.
