Domestic holidays are better for the environment

24 September 2008

Holidays in the UK can be more relaxing and better for the environment, according to the Campaign for Better Transport.

Cat Hobbs, public transport campaigner for the Campaign for Better Transport, explained that travelling by train to a holiday destination instead of flying produces an eighth of the carbon.

"It''s a much better option if you want to do your bit in tackling climate change, and it can be just as much fun and probably more relaxing," she said.

Alongside the environmental benefits, Ms Hobbs believes that avoiding air travel is a more restful way of reaching a holiday location, especially for young families.

"It can be quite stressful going on a plane to somewhere far away. You''ve got all those problems with baggage handling, delays and so on," she added.

According to the Public Transport Statistics Bulletin GB 2008 edition, National Rail use increased, with 1.2 billion passenger journeys made in 2007/08, a rise of 5.8 per cent on the previous year.
