Millions of Brits will be heading to the sun this winter

Brits to spend billions this winter

24 September 2008

A new study suggests that after a disappointing summer British holidaymakers are set to spend billions on finding somewhere sunny this winter.

Research by Abbey Credit Cards revealed that more than 15 million British people (34 per cent) are planning on jetting abroad this autumn and winter and will spend a collective £8 billion in the process.

The British summer was such a let down for some that 1.1 million (six per cent) people have been inspired to take their first holiday abroad for three years.

Abbey Credit Cards found the most popular destinations were the western European sunspots, such as southern Spain and the Canaries with 7.8 million (41 per cent of holidaymakers) planning travel to the region.

Callum Gibson, head of Abbey Credit Cards, said: "Clearly many Britons are in need of escaping our gloomy weather and heading overseas."

The latest statistics from the World Tourism Organisation show that international tourism grew at around five per cent during the first four months of the year.
