Holidaymakers wanting to get fit while on a break abroad should look at the exercise opportunities in Austria, according to a property company.

While many people think of Austria as a winter destination, the country benefits from two ''high seasons'' in both summer and winter.

More tourists are taking advantage of the outdoor pursuits available in Austria with snowboarding and skiing high on the agenda in the winter months.

Jessica Delaney, who deals with Austrian sales for Investors in Property, said: "Rather than just lounging on a beach, they want to take the kids and do some horse riding and cycling and things like that."

Swimming is another popular summer sport which as well as being a great cardiovascular workout is also a good social activity, claims Ms Delaney.

"You can really swim in the lakes in the summer – they''re hotter in the summer. And you’ve got the skiing in the winter," she said.

Research by the government department, ''Statistics Austria'' revealed that there were 16.7 million visitors to the country last summer.
