More pensioners want to travel abroad

Retirees want to travel

12 September 2008

A new study has found that a significant number of people want to go travelling when they retire.

Research by Scottish Widows revealed that 45 per cent of retirees would like to spend their twilight years visiting destinations around the world once they have thrown off the shackles of work.

However, despite these wishes it appears that a lack of funds could hamper the travel plans of many pensioners as Scottish Widows discovered that 49 per cent of employees are not saving enough for their retirement.

Company spokesman Ian Naismith said: "It is encouraging to see that so many people are enjoying themselves after they retire, but it is vital that people who are still working realise the difference between wanting a good retirement and actually planning for one.

"It''s a shame that some people need to spend their hard earned savings on paying off a mortgage or clearing debts. Retirement should be about enjoying life."

The latest statistics from the World Tourism Organisation show that international tourism grew at around five per cent during the first four months of the year.
