Tourists should be vigilant towards pickpockets
Tourists are vulnerable to thieves
11 September 2008Many holidaymakers could be at danger from pickpockets because they do not store their money in a safe place when abroad.
The Telegraph has reported that eight million British holidaymakers have had personal property stolen in the past five years and American Express believes this is because tourists are too blasé about where they keep their cash.
Research by American Express revealed that 16 per cent of people think the best place to keep their holiday cash is in their jeans, while 12 per cent said they would put all their cash in their rucksack or handbag, which are a primary target for thieves.
Sarah Harrison, director at American Express Travellers Cheques, said: "The last thing people want to worry about is money. By carrying all of your cash in your pocket, you could be asking for trouble as if something happens to it, you may be left in the lurch."
Ms Harrison advises holidaymakers to take a combination of cash, cards and travellers cheques abroad in order to spread the risk.
According to American Express, eight per cent of people would keep their holiday money in their bra or underwear in a bid to defeat pickpockets.
