Berlin to commemorate end of communism

Visitors to Berlin in 2009 will be able to be part of a number of commemorative events as the city celebrates the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The highlight of the year''s activities will come on November 9th – the date in 1989 when the Wall came down – when there will be concerts and a street party.

There will also be an open-air exhibition at Alexanderplatz from May to November focusing on the events that occurred in Berlin in 1989 and 1990.

Other tourist attractions in the city that are directly related to its recent history include the Berlin Wall cycling trail, the GDR Museum, the Stasi Museum and the Berlin Wall Documentation Centre.

Holidaymakers in Germany can visit a number of other destinations in the country to learn more about its history and the Cold War, including Mecklenburg, which is home to numerous museums and exhibitions.
