Diamond skull travels to Amsterdam

04 September 2008

Controversial artist Damien Hirst will display his infamous diamond skull in Amsterdam later this year, according to reports.

Visitors to the Dutch capital between November 1st and December 15th this year will be able to see Hirst''s skull as part of his For the Love of God exhibition at the city''s Rijksmuseum.

The piece is a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with 8,601 flawless diamonds, with a large, pear-shaped pink diamond set in the centre of the forehead.

It was unveiled at London''s White Cube gallery in 2007 and received international attention.

Speaking to the Rijksmuseum magazine for art and history, Hirst said: "As an artist I try to make things that people can believe in, that they can relate to, that they can experience. You therefore have to show them as well as possible."

Hirst has also chosen a personal selection of pieces from the museum''s collection of 17th century art to accompany For the Love of God for the six-week exhibition.
