Portugal has become a prime destination for those looking for a luxury golf holiday, claims the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).

Sportsmen and women are heading to the Iberian country because there are a number of quality courses and facilities that appeal to both keen golfers and luxury tourists, according to AITO.

A spokesman for AITO said: "A particular favourite, the Algarve, has one of the densest concentrations of high-quality golf courses in Europe and the area has developed an infrastructure to cater specifically for golfing enthusiasts."

Furthermore, the spokesman argued that with its temperate climate and cultural offerings, Portugal was an ideal holiday destination for non-golfers as well.

"While you are there try areas such as Estoril and Sintra for a more off-the-beaten-track golfing break," he added,

Portugal plays host to some of Europe''s top competitions and won the International Association of Golf Tour Operators Award in 2007.
