According to a survey from tourism website VisitBritain, British couples are the biggest demographic of people taking overnight trips in the UK.

Nearly 60 million overnight trips were made last year within the UK, while foreign tourists accounted for the bulk of the 25 million people who visited London.

Overseas tourists spent an average of six days in the country in 2007 and spent nearly £400 each, adding up to a substantial £8 billion altogether.

Elliott Frisby, a spokesperson for VisitBritain, said: "Our cities are benefiting from regeneration programmes, contemporary attractions, new hotels and architecture. We benefit from centuries of history and heritage attractions as well as a unique culture".

Mr Frisby also drew attention to the variety of landscapes and locations offered by Britain, from rolling countryside to seaside resorts and remote villages with their own unique identities.

According to the United Kingdom Travel Survey, UK residents made 32.9 million overnight trips in the UK between January and April 2008.
