Thousands of Brits get injured on holiday

Medical insurance essential for America

15 August 2008

While it has been reported that more tourists are travelling to America because of the exchange rate, it is increasingly important for them to get health insurance, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

ABI have claimed that travel insurance is more relevant for holidays in America because figures from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office revealed that 8,304 Britons needed assistance in the US last year.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the ABI, said: "The further afield you travel - i.e. outside Western Europe - the more important medical expenses cover is."

An air ambulance costs between £35,000 and £45,000 from USA''s east coast, according to FirstAssist Services so it is essential to have protection, claims Mr Tarling.

"Of course, with the danger of very expensive medical bills, having adequate medical expenses cover is vital when travelling to USA," he added.

Research from Cater Allen Private Bank revealed that 63 per cent of people intend to holiday outside Europe this year.
