Galapagos voted world''s top island destination
16 July 2008Travellers looking for a unique island holiday should start their search by looking at the Galapagos Islands, an archipelago located on the equator about 972km west of Ecuador, according to readers of Travel & Leisure magazine.
The magazine''s 13th annual reader survey found that Galapagos is considered the world''s top island destination, followed by Bali, Maui, Kauai and Tasmania.
Chile''s Easter Island just missed out on a top-five ranking, with Hawaii, Santorini and the Great Barrier Reef islands completing the top ten.
Bangkok was voted the world''s best city by Leisure & Travel readers, taking the top spot from last year''s winner Florence, which was ranked fifth this year.
Other cities to make it into the top ten list included Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Sydney, Rome, New York and Istanbul.
Travellers looking for a touch of luxury will be interested in the list of the world''s top ten hotels, which was topped by the Four Seasons resort in Hawaii, followed by the Oriental in Bangkok and Los Angeles'' Hotel Bel Air.
Some of the less mainstream establishments to make it into the top ten list included Tortilis Camp in Amboseli national park, Kenya and the Kirawira luxury tented camp in Tanzania''s Serengeti national park.
