Australian cycle race invites competitors

16 July 2008

The South Australia Tourism Commission has extended an invitation for tourists to attend, and even take part in, the forthcoming Tour Down Under cycle race.

This event, which will take place between January 20th and 27th, is the only ProTour cycling race outside Europe.

Tour Down Under, which is seen as the southern hemisphere''s equivalent of the Tour de France, gives cycling enthusiasts the chance to get up close to the action and also participate in sections of the race.

Eighteen teams are expected to take part in the 2009 event, including some of the world''s leading riders.

Competitors will take part in six days of races, covering a total of 800km of Australia territory and entertaining crowds of more than 500,000.

Cycling routes pass through the centre of Adelaide, the city outskirts, the Adelaide Hills, the Fleurieu peninsula and the Barossa.

The new finish at Mawson Lakes will represent only the second time that a Tour stage finish has been held in the Adelaide metropolitan area.
