Dubai is the United Arab Emirates'' leading tourist destination

Dubai plans to be an eco-friendly emirate

17 July 2008

Plans have been unveiled to turn Dubai into an environmentally-friendly holiday destination by effecting a substantial reduction in carbon emissions over coming years.

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has announced an initiative to cut emissions related to the hospitality sector by 20 per cent by 2011.

Companies operating within the industry will be encouraged to adopt responsible policies regarding the use of natural resources such as water and gas.

The initiative, which is the first of its kind in Dubai, will involve the creation of a database of CO2 emissions built up as the emirate monitors the activity of its tourism industry.

A ''best practice'' awards programme will also be set up to reward organisations that improve their operations and to encourage other companies to follow suit.

The emissions reduction scheme is part of a drive by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, to make the emirate an environmentally-friendly community.
