Travellers looking for an unconventional holiday experience have been provided with a list of the world''s most unusual places to stay.

According to Giampiero Ambrosi, general manager of VirtualTourist, the travel site that compiled the list, lodgings can often provide an important part of the travel experience.

Top of the list of unusual accommodation is the Edisto River treehouse complex in Canadys, South Carolina.

This is followed by Celica Hostel in Slovenia''s capital of Ljubljana – which once served as a military prison but is now an art gallery and youth hostel – and Vienna''s Schottenstift Monastery.

VirtualTourist''s list of the five most unusual places to stay is rounded off by the Red Caboose motel in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, which uses train carriages as private rooms, and Berlin''s Propeller Island, which boasts everything from upside-down rooms to levitating beds.

In sixth place is the Schlosshotel Schonburg in Oberwesel, Germany, which offers a "true fantasy experience", and in seventh position is the Ariau Amazon Towers near Manaus, Brazil, which comprises eight buildings connected by catwalks.

The top ten is completed by the Hotel Sidi Driss in Tunisia, which was used as a location in Star Wars; the Euromast tower in Rotterdam, Holland; and Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Kenya, which is often frequented by some long-necked visitors.
